Nice little loft Sam! You need to disinfect the patio stones though mate! Jet wash them then use bleach or something. After bleaching/disinfecting, hose off the stones. That will take away the green algi growing on them! The algi can cause your birds health problems, particularly in their crop!

I started like Sam with a 6x4 but, in less than a year realised I needed something bigger. I bought a 12x6 shed and put a partition in the middle - nestboxes in one half and young birds in the other.  I sold the 6x4 but, I wish I'd kept it as I need more room now.  I think I'd advise to get as big a loft as you can to start with.

Here's a link to build your own loft too:

it depends on how many pigeons you want to keep RA but you will need at least a 8x6ft shed because it wont take long before they start breeding and their numbers increase  good luck and keep us all posted on here

How many pigeons could you keep in the redrose starter loft?  How many do you keep in the 6x4 Sam?

Trying to get an idea about how many birds I could realistically keep, the wife is already complaining, so I'll have to start small

i would go as big as you can at the start & once the loft is full you simpley cant have any more!!! plus it looks better than adding bits on especially if its in your garged you wanna keep the missus & neighbours happy!!

Sorry to disagree, but I believe that it is far far better to have a smaller loft and make the birds earn their perch. Stick to say 12 - 15 pairs even, and just select after each season before the moult. Record all their goings and comings, habits, races days out - and reasons if any, you or the bird, and refuse the urge to expand as long as you can. 12 x 8 split into  two sections is ample to be sucessful. Better costwises, easier to observe and manage. JMO

I started with a 4x2 loft with 3 birds...got addicted and now have a 10x6 loft split into 2 sections with an aveiry. I am worried when i start racing next year that this loft is too small but my friend assured me that with the right management that i will be able to race comfortable with this loft if on the natural system. ;D
