Guest Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 I was reading the bhw/rp the other day & noticed that the so called sprint birds were being beaten by the distance breeds, so it got me thinking when they are youngsters these distance families seem to be able to fly at near 2000ypm so what changes cos it seems once they are old birds these distance birds dont stand a chance at the shorter races is it the management do we determine wwhether the bird will be a sprint or dist racer through our management what do you think
shotgun tim Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 i think the same a bird does not no its a sprinter or distance if i gave you a distance bird and told you it was a sprinter you would feed and manage it different a good bird is a good bird in the egg
jimmy white Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 there are as many different ,so called breeds as , many different type races ,, as well as differant type fanciers,,in my opinion a good manager has a ability to determine which birds are capable[irrespective of what their , so called breed is ] of what, the pigeons capabilities are and the way to set them up for their determined race, easier to print than do,, ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 I honestly believe it mostly comes down to how the birds are managed for the job in hand. An example of my own pigeons is that I keep two teams one natural for the distance and one widowhood for the shorter classics etc. 2 years ago I had a couple of cocks that should have gone in the widowhood team but had no room so for that season put them in the natural team. Prepared them the same as my naturals obviously and sent them to the distances I normally get their brothers and sisters in the other team from. Miles behind the others every week. Following year in the widowhood team they went , different feeding and different managemnt - sent to same distances and they couldn't be touched.
Roland Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 System and contentment and management, providing the birds wants to home.
Mark Bulled Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 A few years back I had 2 sections next to each other 16 sprints cocks one section and 8 distance cocks in the other. Treated EXACTLY the same. Let out together fed the same, identical. Up to 250 miles I had nearly all the sprint pigeons home first winning the fed 5 times over 300 miles the distance cocks came winning many scottish positions. So I believe its all in the breeding and not the system - for my birds/system anyway!!
Roland Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 Jim Biss's Natrix won at 50 miles right through....
schouwman71 Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 me 2 i really do believe there is distance birds and sprint birds,u can handle speed birds and tell there fast birds, there like wedges in the hand, the distance birds are more boat shaped or apple bodied.
