Guest Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 Would like some opinions on this ...i have a stray yb that has come in to me for the third time in as many weeks. The owner a local man has trained the bird only 4 times and 3 its come here . He will call and give me copy vaccination & transfer on sunday .By the time transfer has cleared (2 weeks say..) we will be at a racepoint 174miles away. Unsure what to do .......
ribble Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 i'd get it trained with your own birds and send it to a race even before the transfer had come back.he has given it to you so its yours to race.the one thing i wouldn't do though is clock it in as it could cause problems if it had a prize.not that id bother but there are some sticklers about in this sport.hope it does you some good not all strays are bad, good look anyway.
mO Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 If ya want it, great, you could continue to train it back to your loft and ya got ya self a good racer for next year as an old bird. Once the transfere is signed the bird becomes your responsibility and should ya send it, lose it and its reported you got ya self a problem £23 Amtrx etc. I personnally wouldn,t send it as a y/bird. Also ask him for a copy Pedigree as once ya find out what it is really off you may not want to keep too long.
Guest Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 Thanks Ribble will ask about next week (98mile) could send as a trainer maybe ? Thanks Mo , first time yb came into me he explained what it was off good channel birds that have carded for him, he>s freindly with an uncle of mine and i believe genuine . CHEERS.

HOPE YOU DONT MIND ME PICKING UP ON A FEW POINTS WHICH TO ME ARE WRONG TO MAKE TO A NOVICE,JUST BECAUSE THE BIRD CAME BACK TO HIS LOFT ON A FEW TRAINING TOSSES DOESN,T MEAN IT WILL BE A GOOD RACER FOR NEXT YEAR,THE TRANSFER NEEDS TO BE SENT TO THE UNION AND REGISTERED IN HIS NAME BEFORE HE IS RESPONSABLE FOR IT,AS IF IT WAS LOST IT WOULD BE REPORTED TO THE PRESENT OWNER,WHAT DIFFERANCE DOES IT MATTER WHAT IT SAYS ON THE PEDIGREE THAT DOESN,T GUARENTEE IT WILL BE A GOOD OR BAD BIRD.AS FOR SENDING IT TO A RACE JUST PUT IN DOWN ON THE RACE SHEET AS A TRAINER UNTIL THE TRANSFER COMES BACK THEN YOU CAN ENTER IT IN THE RACE PROPER.
Guest shadow Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 In my time racing pigeons I have transfered a few stray's and never found a good one they all trained well even beating my own youngsters back but all went missing again when racing started and were never reported.Personally most of them are not woth the bother.
Guest Paulo Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 I second shadow if you race a stray odds are that it will stray again.
Guest Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 There is always an exception , only 4 old racing cocks , che pied got me my only card this year 4th club . Came in squeaking as yb told to keep & try him . He is also sire to 1 of only 7 ybs i have left , having lost many ?
PIGEON_MAN Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 SENT A STRAY BACK YESTERDAY,GUY LOST HIM AT THE SECOND RACE,FIRST RACE HE WAS 1ST CLUB 4TH FED,AS THEY SAY NOT ALL STRAYS ARE BAD.ANOTHER STORY HAD A DARK CHECKER YOUNG BIRD COME IN THIS WAS IN 1980 BIRD WAS IN A TERRIBLE STATE ANYWAY KEPT HIM IN A WIDOWHOOD HEN BOX UNTIL HE PICKED UP A BIT AND REPORTED HIM,GUY TOLD ME TO DO WHAT EVER I WANTED WITH HIM BUT HE WAS A WELL BRED BIRD(USUAL STORY)ANYWAY GOT HIM BACK TO RIGHT,S LIKED HIM THAT MUCH I BRED OFF HIM.I HAVE EITHER WON OR TAKEN POSITIONS IN THE FIRST FOUR EVERY YEAR SINCE WITH PIGEONS, RELATED TO THAT BIRD.
Guest Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 In 2003 I had a young hen come in which I reported. As usual the guy on the phone said it was off his best. However I really did like the bird so I transferred it and gave it a go. Put it on widowhood as a yearling and clocked her from bergerac on the night. Then 2005 got minor cards in club but finished season being 3rd sect, 7th Open in a very tough BICC Falaise. Then this year sent her to Sennon Cove NFC where she was 9th section, 261st open, then finished the season clocking her from Bergerac again. This was the only time I have ever transferred a youngen but I really did fancy her as a baby so I must have got lucky. Just shows you though you can lose the good as well as the bad as babies.
speedbird Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 it doesnt mean a stray is a bad bird for looseing its way they are many different reasons, weather, clashed,or as ybs simply just get there heads down & dont stop till knackerd leaving them too tierd to get home im sure we all at some point have lost some or even our best pigeons from time to time
shiftty Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 yea i agree with speedbird that they clash, get attacked and other things, which results in losses but doesnt meen to say that they are bad birds, however thats just the way it goes in pigeon racing i have lost many good and potentially good pigeons to cats and hawks and so on. But i also agree that its misleading to say that strays maybe good because sadly thats mostly the case, i did have 1 once that was from a newcastle fed that as a old bird was 4th 2 times and was my first bird home on different occasions beating my own birds home, however as said above i lost this bird and most of the strays i have had transfered to me.
peterpau Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 The money I've wasted on "good" pigeons the two best hens we have are two hens that came in as stray young birds in 2000, must have been a good year though cos not had any like it since.
Guest Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 hi, i had a stray come in on a friday night ,and reported it same night,i was going to masserella,s on the sunday and told the guy in wolverhampton,id be going past there on sunday, i liberated the bird as i told the owner in wolverhampton and that was wot i thought the end of it.when i got back to my s/wales home later that day i sat down for tea..low and behold that youngster was on my cot....transfer took place and i topped the welsh fed around 5-6ooo birds with it. as a yearling..by 22 yrds...but alas next doors cat had it 3 weeks later.....and ive had a good few fed posistions with strays...but not all!.
sportagraphs Posted August 27, 2006 Report Posted August 27, 2006 Two nationals in this country on the same weekend both won by strays transferred as YB's. cant remember exactly who they where thnk one was les nicholls bristol. anyway just goes to show not all strays are rubbish
jimmy white Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 ;train and send the bird ,,see what its made of,,,,,remember a national winner from winchburgh , being a stray [not when it won the national ;D ;D ;D]
Wiley Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 They dont breed bad pigeons either, when listening to some old fanciers who used to work on the docks in east london they used to say if u saw a belgian bird theyd have fights over who would try and catch it as belgian birds always supposably bred good pigeons, not like that anymore lol. Also listening to my dad who one had a blue pied come in transfered it,at the time my dad had a direct son of the champion magic blue and alot of people wanted a young un from it,however he put a grandson with magic blue with it and it bred this guy a fed winner, and bred my dad some good pigeons with other cocks
