HAD WEE PEGS DOO,S OUT THIS AFTERNOON,HEN SPARROW HAWK HIT A LATEBREAD 15FT FROM WHERE I WAS STANDING. I TRIED TO "SHOO" THE HAWK AWAY WITH A SCRAPER, I PICKED A LATEBREAD OFF THE GROUND ,IT WAS SO TERRIFIED IT JUST SAT THERE.

THINK SHE WILL BE BACK  >:(

The sparrowhawk population has increased down here over the past ten years,  I see them everyday, but they never bother my pigeons.  Food must be plentiful for them, I often find circles of feathers in the garden left from an attack on a small bird.  As much as I love the garden birds, I'm thankful it's them and not my pigeons.  I wonder if the sparrowhawk starts hassling them in the winter months?

only had a couple of hawk attacks in the last couple of years

had my best  white hen hit it managed to get home with horrific injuries between its shoulders.......poor thing died a few day later...............also had one taken in mid flight......

We have loads around us...sparrow hawks, goss hawks......and some very strange hybrids that live on the local steel works.....................

Whilst waiting for the national birds last Saturday, A bird of prey came horizontally and picked a bird up without changing pace from the top of  my loft. It wasn't a sparrowhawk, there maybe hybrid hawks coming on the scene  now, seeing that they are so plentiful. It was a lightish brown, Anybody any idea of species whatever? Its speed was  phenominal. :o

I struggled to ID the one that swooped on one of my B-Rollers and took it in mid flight....it was the same ...a very sandy brown colour.. but slightly bigger than a sparrow hawk.

It hit like a peregrine but wasn't one!.....I believe the ones on our local steel works are captive bred lanner falcons (gone wild) crossed with native peregrines or goss goss hawks.....

...............the lanner x peregrine would be a deadly arial assasin...... but hey just are too quick to get a photo of.........

Vic it could be a young Peregrine i think they are a light colour until they mature properly. Most Peregrines make there way to the coast at the end of the breeding season so hopefully you won't be bothered with it or them for long.

i have had 2 round my loft and they were light browm. they were around for about a week or so but have now disapeared thank God.

i believe this to be true ,,there are now hybrids,,wings is spot on about young peregrine they are like this ,as he says ,, but more likely to take a bird in flight than from the loft top,, ,,its not that long ago ,i was telling rose about a hawk flying over my loft ,,one which i couldn't identify ,,looked a larger than sparrow hawk bird , but smaller than buzzard ,, even maybe slightly larger than peregrine ,, this bird had a very light colour ,, although it didn't go for the birds it fairly gave them a fright ,,,,,it was flying in a straight direction , right out of sight

Almost certainly a Goshawk Vic bit bigger than the hen spar and a bit lighter in colour but more lethal to the doos unfortunately.

A lot of captive birds go awol in the summer, especially from amatures as they don't use tracking, the birds get good thermal currents and can soar for miles >:(

Hello James,

There is a company called Dazer UK (Tel: 01733 315888) that have a range of

defences against birds of prey, notably Guard 'N' Eyes balloons but I seem

to recall they also sell the pigeon wing transfers

Comment:

being a life long pigeon fancier and nature lover, i found to my horror,

that when releasing 45 pigeons [4 fanciers] that a perigrine struck the

batch, the birds all went for cover into gorse bushes trees etc this

happened on wednesday past at carter bar [just past jedburgh,,so far only

3 have returned , have you any advice how to stop this in the future.
