louella sale of redundant older stock birds

Well I went across to maerdy today, reckon Louella after expenses cleared 5grand, not bad for a bunch of old timers. Must admit struggled to find what we were looking for, a) pigeons that would breed B) and then type.

The first 100 in pens went pretty quick, guys were just saying I'll have that, without handling or owt!! There were a lot of birds especially the Busschaerts though I didn't see many SVR cause they went like lightening, that would have been fantstic racers but would never breed a winner. There were two 12 yo cocks that would win a lot in eye sign shows but were best in the cook pot.

The guys handing the birds out were fed up with Henry a & me cause the second round that came in to the pens, we must have handled everyone. We did end up with 2 x 2007 hens, which if they are still sound will breed winners; the good thing about those two is that they weren't sh*gged out, they still had good bodies, which was quite rare from what we handled.

The two guys dishing out the birds worked their b0ll0cks off they did a great job for massarella and took a bit of stick early on cause when 12.30 came every man and his dog had a bird they wanted to handle.

Thought I would give some feedback on these ‘shagged’ birds that Louella have been selling off. As you will see above a wildy hen bred us a very good young bird winner, besides this hen we bought two others a Jan Aarden and a SVR and at Maedry 2 x1997 hens (not 2007).

Well the Jan Aarden bred a yearling this year to take 3rd Messac and 2nd Cholet and she lives on, she went to Saintes and I have her to go further next year (Percy willing). The SVR has bred nothing yet but it would help if we had bred off her. We have taken a pair this year but she is not with a cock we would like for her, perhaps next year! I do expect her to breed good uns.

Now on to the Maerdy hens, first a Busschaert a lovely hen in every way capable of breeding out to 550 mile…..except she laid soft eggs, we decided because of her age there was no point in trying to get her right. Pity cause she was lovely!!

The second a Janssen hen, not the prettiest, Henry my partner does like his females to be pretty, however she had the physical conformation he likes and for me she was a belter a lovely eye but only to about 320 /350 mile , possibly some of her offspring might get 380.  A daughter of this hen went to BBC Lamballe on Saturday and took 10th provisional, hopefully she will be no lower than 20th when the full result comes out.

Three of the five we bought have bred birds to score, a good quality club winner topping the WECA, another taking 2 & 3rd as a yearling over the pond and the third finishing well up in the BBC. As to the other two, I believe the SVR will breed winners (however we are so overstocked she may not get the chance!!) sadly the Buschaert hen failed. At £35 a time I think we have had excellent value and will reiterate if you are able to select then there are bargains to be had. I do believe Mr Massarella has done a great service to the fancy and the legacy he created allowing ordinary folk to purchase top bloodlines should never be underestimated or forgotten.

A friend of mine bought some jan arrdens from louella's two years ago two pair and they proved to fertile and bred some very good birds for him including two channel winners. so you pay your money and take your chances but at £35 per bird they have to be worth it

all i can say is that canker the birds well not long from delivery or any other bird to be fair you buy in that way your loft stabilises at a reasonable level,

I would have to agree with Roland on this. The quality of bloodlines Louella have purchased would in my opinion increase their percentage chances of breeding winners to more than your average fancier's percentage. Whilst i would agree that paying big money for a bird does not guarantee it will breed winners, the quality of the bloodlines will increase the chances of success!

Louella have their critics, but i'm not one of them. Credit where credit is due!

if we all bred as much as louella we would all have winners reported all over the uk.

But there in is the hypocricy, my brother if you had a couple of grand stashed in your briefcase you would gladly give it to the needy. Pleased to see we still have socialists in pigeons....., you are entitled to your opinion which is different to mine, no problem....... but what has the fact that they have made money got to do with it?
