get hold of any sprint birds mate its not the breed its the way u race them. does your club go over the channel.

A popular choice might be janssens,but I feel motivation and health are probably more important than strain.

thanks everyone the advise was helpful. i dont like janssens, ive had no luck with them. Thanks mac1 for the offer of free pigeons, and im from worcestershire my club does fly the channel but its only to massac. ;D

how could you have no luck with them if you are new to the sport  ?

i only started in june this year and i had 3 rolad janseens and they kept roofing so i gave up on them

Hi Dogeon,

 

Not all Janssens are Roland Janssens - The bulk of the Janssen Bros pigeons in this country is what are raced very succesfully by thousands of lofts. Roland Janssen only shares the same surname.

 

I feel you can;t go wrong with a Janssen based pigeon - problably 80% of birds racing today have the Janssen Bros birds in them.

Hope you've still got these birds. Used to have grey 'salt & pepper' hair and it turned shock white due to similar experience with my 1st YBs.  

 

No offence, but I think we all start off with pigeons that seem to think they are the boss and can do as they like, it takes a wee while to get them to do what we want. No point in giving up on the birds or changing 'strains', you need to work on your control of them, getting them to come when called, so that it becomes second nature. My opinion, with YBs it's the 1st job you do and need to get right every year.

Agree with what you say, but think you've missed the most important bit.

 

You get the birds into a routine from the first day they are taken away from their parents. At feeding time or whenever you top-up the feeder you train them to come to the feeder by whistling, blowing a whistle, ringing a bell, rattling feed in a can, or verbally calling them - which method you use is your own choice - but stick to that same routine as they will soon associate it with being fed and come without thinking about it.  Eventually they will come just on hearing 'the call' hungry or not, as its now ingrained training ... Sunday name for it is 'Pavlovian Conditioning' ... and it works with any animal.

dont think you can really blame the birds dogeon,, my fav saying to new starters is , the three c,s   condition, contenment, and control , to win races up to 200 [or any distance] miles you must have these three qualities to begin with,,,,then its down to motivation ,, my advice would be to go to your local best sprint flier, and listen look and learn ,,all the very best to you and hope to see results next year on the forum :)

morning every 1 to answer all,

ive still got the pigeons and there still a pain, i thought it was that they were not hungry enough so ill try that method, and i do use a bell,

the problem i have with local flyers is in the club im in there a bit cut throat, reason being i was told to feed them rice on a 130 mile race and i read somewhere that extreme distance flyers give there birds some rice so ive been put off local flyers

my guess is that its down to me and the birds at the end of the day
