jupiter_19630 Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Paired up on Feb 14th and most are now sitting tightly. Three hens have failed to lay so far. One is a yearling, one a two year old and one unknown. Two are prisoners though don't seem fat. They have pickstones and grit as well as the obvious nest pan and nesting material. Any one else had this problem and if so how did you solve it?

Any one else had this problem and if so how did you solve it? I have 2 the same, a late-bred and a 3 year old. The cocks are chasing them hard, so maybe the problem. The late-bred looks like she will tonight, but the 3 year old isnt showing any sign. I think she has been gorging on too much grit and minerals which maybe the cause. Ive put multivits in the water, so they aren't lacking anything, so hopefully they will lay soon :-/, if not ill put the loft heating on as it is fairly cold at the moment
jupiter_19630 Posted March 1, 2007 Author Report Posted March 1, 2007 I,m not the only one then. Is a pain because I wanted to wean the entire first round all together rather than in dribs and drabs.
westy Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 how much are you feeding them ive had the same with 1 pair of stock my stock. i took the hens away and got them to loose wiegth paired em back together the other day there mateing again now.
jupiter_19630 Posted March 1, 2007 Author Report Posted March 1, 2007 I feed them by hand as much as they want for 5 mins or so twice a day.
stevebelbin Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Definately not too much weight on mine ;D ;D, they were fed barley to get them down to the right weight. Ive been preparing them for weeks. You nearly always get one or two that do it. The 3 year old in mine thats not laid, is on loan, so shes in a strange loft and that maybe the cause!!! Jupiter, if your flying widowhood, then you will still be able to wean most off at the same time, just move the hens over with the Ybs and they will continue to feed them
mac1 Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 join the club mate i have 15 promised to members and only have 10 ybs up till now for myself, dont know how im going to do it but i will manage i hope

Guest Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 There's usually always one or two that cause problems, especially yearlings & latebreds. Paired mine 9th Feb and last two pairs laid 1st on 26th Feb: one a 5 yo cock who was obviously still bonded to last year's mate, and gave this years late bred a hard time; and the other a 10 yo hen I brought in in 2005 and didn't winter her (or the other birds) properly 2005/2006 which knocked her completely off-cycle all last year. Fed the birds Breeders over the winter period, an ounce per pigeon, + hormoform. Monday before I paired them up I halved Breeders + split a 500g bag of barley between them (26 pigeons ) for 3 days, then put them up on the Friday night. Agree on shifting youngsters together: I'm Natural and I find its easier to wait a few days more to make sure the youngest are eating & drinking OK, then move them all thro to the YB end together.
jupiter_19630 Posted March 1, 2007 Author Report Posted March 1, 2007 Seems to be a common problem. Just paired 2 pairs as was 2 hens short so hopefully the 3 non layers will go down roughly the same time as these 2 pairs. That way I can either keep the early younguns in the nest a little longer and ween them all at once or ween them in 2 batches.

Don't worry on my account if your struggling m8. I,ll settle for a later round if need be. If you think that might still be a problem post the rings back. I,m sure I,ll be able to fill them. All the best m8
likklegriz Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 I,m not the only one then. jupiter_19630 Posted March 3, 2007 Author Report Posted March 3, 2007 I,ve just put the 2 yo hen in the yb section with her mate with a nest pan in the corner. They had paired ok but the hen seemed reluctant to nest. Looked just now and they are both in the nest pan. May be it was too busy in breeding section. Will have to wait and see.
chickadee Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 HI, we are having problems with our pouters, they are always laying eggs but they never seem to be fertile. I felt so sorry for them the last time that we put someone elses egg under them and now they have a beautiful white foster chick, they don't seem to mind the fact that they are a different colour from their chick.
chickadee Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 we also have a laying problem with our Indian fantails, the male has been on top of the female a few times but, sadly, no eggs. Guess we'll have to keep hoping....
THE FIFER Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 we also have a laying problem with our Indian fantails, the male has been on top of the female a few times but, sadly, no eggs. Guess we'll have to keep hoping.... if u can get a couple of eggs put them in the nest u will find she may sit and hatch them. i have a hen that does'nt lay and its handy for puting eggs to her.
Guest Big Blue Posted March 19, 2007 Report Posted March 19, 2007 JUST TO LET U KNOW ALL MINE HAS LAID NOW
chickadee Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Just to let you all know that our Indian fantail has started collecting nesting material, ( which i've never seen them do that before ) so we are keeping our fingers crossed. But, i've heard that the Indian fantails that we have are not very good parents. They are a pair of saddlebacks. Has anyone else heard this or heard of this before. :-/
Guest shadow Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 lots of fancy pigeons are not good parents and need feeders to bring up their young
