if you paired your stock birds this sunday, you could have yb,s to ring for jan the 1st [if you had rings :) in scot your supposed to get your rings on jan 10th   stock birds paired 28 nov would make ringing ,,,,,,any advantages ,,,,or just feeding the yb,s longer :)

The only advantage I can see jimmy is that you would get another round out of your stockbirds to race. If I thought theres an advantage to be had racing old birds by doing it lol I'd be doing it. I'll not be pairing up for another couple of months yet :)

Personally, I think fancier and bird need a bit of a break.  :)

It's a long enough 'season' for both without cutting into the 'off-season', and there's more to life than breeding & racing,  ;D   for both of us.  ;D

Then there's all the other house & garden and 'living' stuff that needs doing .....

never used to pair up before february and had all the young birds I required before racing started :)

Are those calculations correct? If you pair up tomorrow they will lay in 10 days and then hatch in 19 days more. They will need ringing in the next 10 days, which is still in December? I thought about the 6-8th of Dec was the earliest date to get rings on?

You got it mate, your calculation  is spot on

it used to be the showbirds that were paired up early after the blackpool show. :)

yes and the weather we can get in december could make it more than 10 days to lay.

How memories fade & grow dim  ... mines included.  ;D

Spate of posts on forum early in the year on hawk attacks on fanciers lofts. Took a while for the penny to drop that it was early-bred youngsters that were attracting these attacks because that was the only thing the lofts reporting these attacks had in common, and it was the youngsters that were being taken.

Happy to wait till Mid-Feb, early March, also give me time to work out my pairs.

paired sun, nov 11th

lay 15 days ,[this time of year]so lay  26th nov

hatch 18 days later ,  14th dec ,by the 1st of jan they would be 17 days old  it would be very close but a really good" ringer" could get rings on these at that age using the right tools  :),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,that was if you could get rings for first of jan  :), but as i said in my post in scot , we cant get rings till the 10th of jan [or rather your not supposed to get them b4 the 10 of jan] so in scot it would be poss [hard , but poss] to pair up on the 21st nov and have 08 rings on,,,,,,off course this is pushing things to the limit  :) :) :) which personally i think theres no need for  :)

in my opinion for early season races, birds paired up after blackpool [w hood] later season birds 1 month later also w,hood  ,, then nat birds end of march, whether w hood or natural :)

How do you get rings on a 17 day old bird, and what tools would an expert use?

I'm going for 10th Dec.  I only breed from my stock birds and only have a few so I'm not going to get caught out this year and should any youngsters go backwards, I shall have time to replace them.  If you have plenty of pigeons to breed from, then things would be different and I think a later pairing date would be fine.

A guillotine to cut the foot off.

I have trouble getting rings on some ybs at 7 days old.
