What age do you ring your youngsters? We have done it at 5 days as recommended but have found them coming off them sometimes. And if we wait longer we cannot get the rings on

We like to ring the ones in the cotes, they are harder to log dates and times unlike the lofts, we do not always get the 5 days right.

I was very surprised to hear you can or some can, ring them up to 17 days if they know what they are doing

Had the same problem last year on some of my youngsters Pete.(Braspenning's the other breeds seemed fine).

I think its best to play it by ear and just check each day from 4 days on.

Heard some club member saying he got a ring's on 12 day youngsters because he forgot to ring them.Reckons he used baby oil on the birds leg first.

I like to check from 5 days. As folk say, it depends on breed  - and how you rear them, mine are usually single-reared. My family also seem to have big feet - long toes and long curved toenails, which can cause bother especially pulling the back toe back through the ring. I've used an oil when I've left it beyond 7 days, but find spitting on the inside of the ring and the birds leg does the same job but makes it a lot less slippy.

Difficult to get it right, but I'd rather have the ring on a day early than a day late, and I always check the youngster still has the ring for a few days after ringing anyway.

I once gave 2 rings to an old fancier who said he would breed me a pair of squeakers. He rang a week later to say they were ready and when I got there they had my rings on and were about 25 days old and weaned! He would not say how he got the rings on, he just winked. The birds were fine by the way, no damage to their feet at all. To this day don't know how he did it?

A club member reckons he can get a ring on like this - and told me how he does it - and no way would I do that  :o :o :o :o

Are the rings you use bigger than normal for these ones?

So, if the legs are thicker than normal, should the rings not be wider than normal?
