Went to Telford today, didn't seem fair that the sale went ahead really. He had birds on show and the stalls couldn't. Dunno how much he made but i hear lot 1 went really high.

All other sellers could do was to hang pedigrees on the walls, a real shame that. Dunno if Jos is Belgian or dutch but i feel it should have been british that were allowed to sell. I hope that doesn't sound racist but we have top fliers in this country and i'm sure their sales perished with the bird flu outbreak and yet this sale went ahead. It really annoys me that someone decided that THIS sale could be done and no others.

That now said, the store holders kept a smile on their faces hope sales pick up for the others.

Just my opinion

I couldn't fault the birds myself but our sport in this country should look after itself first and foremost. Dunno what the score is abroad but in this country I, and many others pay RPRA Fees and yet i was not allowed to take pigeons to Telford not that i'm a seller, (still a learner). Again i should state that this is not against the birds because they were a credit to the man.

i think its disgraceful that one seller of birds can show their birds and another cant(especially from this country/uk).

defra should be questioned why they have been biased towards this happening and closed all other sales...surely mp,s have bulletts to fire now at the next commons meeting.,i would contact ur local mp and get him/her to bring it up .

sadly this will be the start of things to come ,will stall holders return year after year when there takings are down and cannot make any profit .

the auctioner of jos birds will in his eyes have been the main attraction for people attending the sale £50.000 for a days work .

the poor british stall holders trying to make ends meet at these events have been kicked in the teeth. these people support the shows year in year out but for how much longer.

but sadly with this bird flu hn51 in my opinion will always be about ,espeacily in the poultry business with unfilled orders of millions of birds each year ,do you feed them for nothing and go bankrupt or do you get bird flu and make a fortune .

this poultry business will kill pigeon racing in my opinion as i believe we will always get outbreaks around easter and christmas time the main business for the poultry industries .

how long before defra make it law where expensive licenses must be had before your allowed to keep any bird in the british isles . :'( :'(

i have no problem helping anyone foriegners who ever needs help ,but i think charity starts at home ,but sadly it always seems as though the british man /woman just get treated like idiots all the time ,if they tell you long enough you will believe it .weapons of mass destruction ,global warming ,and another thousand stealth taxes ,bird flu pandemic  ,but remember one shot of tammy flu will cure you RIGHT.

WE ARE ALL TREATED LIKE MUSHROOMS KEPT IN THE DARK AND COVERED IN SXXT

Hi excuse my igorance, perhaps I've missed it in the above posts.....but why were the Jos Thone birds allowed and no others?

Exactl! But that is the norm of our upbringing, throughout from being the 'Haves and have nots'. Betcha bottom dollar the french and co would have demonstrated well ... or just gone a head and told the equivalent to DAFRA to get stuffed ... like they did with their' 'Racing'.

Seems the average was £800 per bird! GOOD LUCK TO HIM!

But how much will this practise costur home grown boys in future, let alone yesterday!

albear i dont know the answer to that one maybe one of the organisers could answer why jos birds where sold and the back bone of any show be it stall holders showmen /woman cannot have any .

i take it they will have strongly put a case forward for these birds to be sold at auction and forgot about the backbone of the shows .

Eagle owl it's a strange one, I'm wondering whether some legislation that our governing body is not aware of has been used. I shall contact DEFRA to ask the question if no one can supply the answer.

Thanks Eagle Owl

Alan it would be interesting to get the facts from DEFRA on this one canary shows banned ,UK birds banned ,Belgian birds not banned what if the outbreak originates from Belgium . Defra Gloucester vet told me on Friday until they knew where the out break came from restriction movements would stay in place .

Now if we get a good barrister he will destroy Defras case this is all about money as in the case in Norfolk this year.I hope the Unions act as one i will be contacting the NCA on the cage bird side i also show Belgian fancy canaries im writing to my MP please do the same and harry the Unions to act . This is blatant mismanagement and bias please lets all act as one .

Steve been there, likewise Allbear. Had emails from MP's and even an EMP wholike his father and grandfather kept pigeons offering all the help possible.... no oe was inteested.

Most are content to sit back and sigh 'If only ...' and moan others haven't done what they BEKIEVE should have done, been done for them. Ask any fancier for a little quiddy though and not only are they excuse finding, but want to know how much extra prize money there will be, and how much will the cost of birdage be down.

Yes after two meeting where the facts were laid out plain and bare for all to see, the members of a certain club iunder duress agreed that subs would have to go up via £5just to cover basic costs. Yes you guessed it, come the AGM they were swarmed with ideas how to get more and yet mre, now the extra £100 odd quiddies were raise. Several left that season too claiming it was unjust and only fair that the money went to the prize money.... Shouldn't be any  prize money till any and every bill has ben paid!

Think you are way off mark here on 2 counts.

(1) Stallholders would be betting that Jos Thone would be a crowd-puller, they would be betting on getting the crumbs left over from the big sale. Happens in all sales venues ... every local shopping centre has always a key 'name' store to attract customers AND attract other 'lesser' stores. Without the one 'big' name, no vibrant shopping centre, plenty empty shop units

(2) Jos Thone was a single group of birds from a single loft and as such outwith the definition of AI Legislation's 'bird gathering'. I assume the stallholders were selling birds from a group of different lofts, which is a 'bird gathering' and at the moment, these are banned.

Posted elsewhere that I am 'stunned' that we are now into the 3rd season of these flippin AI restrictions, and fanciers still don't appear to have a good grip on what these restrictions are. We have had single source sales during 'no bird gatherings' every year, think last one was Jim Biss's birds [Elimar Auctions] last year, but may be mistaken on named sale.

Not sure where you others were at but there was 2 or 3 differant auctions going on at telford today.

There were auctions going on all day at Telford on Saturday!!!!!!

What i cannot understand is this:

There were auctions all day in the same hall as the stallholders, so why were the stallholders not allowed to sell birds.

Just a thought....Bob

Bruno, think I understand where you are coming from... but I can't believe every stall holder had birds from mixed lofts......is that what you're saying? would be obliged for clarification if I've got that wrong.

Stephen, Nobby Henley came up to our club meeting last week claiming DEFRA would not be able to stop us racing over the channel  next year, says there is a fancier with £100k deposited with solicitors ready to take DEFRA on ....... well now's his chance!!

I don't know what the set-up at Telford was, Albear, but some sort of deal seems to have been struck between DEFRA and the organisers in the days leading up to the event. Pigeon_man says there was more than one auction, so basically DEFRA seem to be applying the rules differently for each occasion. I did pick up a paragraph in the license legislation which puzzled me, appeared to be saying even if the license is revoked, event can go ahead subject to a veterinary risk assessment. Maybe that is what happened here?

This is the bit from DEFRA website that I was speaking about in my last post:-

Bird fairs, markets, shows and other gatherings

As from Monday 12th November 2007 all bird gatherings, including falconry displays, fairs, markets, shows, exhibitions and pigeon races, are banned in GB for the time being due to the avian influenza situation. All such gatherings planned over the next few days must be cancelled.

The General Licence issued under Regulation 6 of the Preventive Measures (England) Regulations 2006  (Link to OPSI website) on 14 August is therefore revoked.

The ban has been put in place because of the high risk nature of bird gatherings and our current uncertainty of the epidemiology of this disease. We will keep this ban under review as the disease situation develops. However, events can continue if they only involve a single bird or birds which are normally kept together so do not pose an increased risk of disease spread but guidance should be followed.

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/notifiable/disease/ai/keptbirds/index.htm#birdfair

This is the 'guidance' that is to be followed at single flock events:-

Avian influenza (bird flu): Biosecurity guidance for single flock events

A single flock event is when the birds are from one source and are being presented for either sale or show.  These must be birds that are kept together on a single premises.

During the event they must be the only flock on the premises or it will become a gathering.  The premises will include the palce where the birds  (this includes the venue car park).   ???????

There are common practices that should be followed by organisers of single flock events, especially when using premises at which other single flock events or gatherings occur. ??????

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/notifiable/disease/ai/keptbirds/singleflock.htm

?????? - seems contradictory to me. more than one flock on premises = a gathering, the premises includes the car park, but 'common practices should be followed when using premises  at which other single flock events occur ....  :-/

Bruno, after reading your article thats exactly how the auctions took place,

1: An auction took place

2: The birds were sold, and boxed.

3: On completion of the auction the birds were taken to an office, which was not in the same hall.

4: Another auction took place, carrying out 1-3.

No mixed birds in one venue at a time, not a gathering, cute loop-hole, i wonder if Defra will close this loophole for Blackpool.

A few fliers down south here have also heard that someone with financial clout is ready to take on Defra.
