Below is an email that I sent to my local Echo and Peter Bryant after hearing the BBC news Moday Night. The SW Echo got back to me and as a result I am going to be in tonights press. I hope they do not miss-quote me (you know what the media are like).

I am seriously considering chairing a meeting with the Sports Council etc to try and understand why they do not wish to class Pigeon Racing as a sport!

Watch this space....

I heard on the news today that Racing Homing pigeons is not a sport and will have to pay business rates! This is not acceptable!!! Most of us would not be here if it was not for the Homing Pigeon as during the world wars they received 53 dickens medals the equivilant to the george cross (many more medals than war dogs). If it was not for these fantastic birds there would have been many more lives lost!!!! It is about time the media, the government, the general public and DEFRA understood this and appreciated, that us pigeon fanciers are keeping this memory alive by this wonderful sport of ours. Also did you know that at any time homing pigeons could be called upon to help us win wars again!!! This is fact! The queen has her own pigeon loft and is the Patron of the British Racing Pigeon. So please get real they are not flying rats they are valuable part of our British Heritage.

PS it is us humans that are the disease spreaders (rats on two legs), we are the ones who pollute the environment, drop all types of litter etc etc etc.....

I feel very strongly about this!!

I welcome anyone to challenge me otherwise.

Peter Bryant is not doing what he should for our SPORT! Where is the Queen in all this? Where is her statement?????

Most of us keep a small loft - pigeon racing is expensive enough anyway without the added tax!

I agree with Pault on the other thread that all big pigeon breeders and sellers should be taxed. What was that Idiot on about agreeing with the Government - obviously more money than sense!!!

I do however agree that some pigeon fanciers breed much more than they need to or can afford therefore high lossess adding to the ferrel population.

When you have a back garden loft we should all consider our neighbours.

This way they will become more adverse to the SPORT of pigeon racing! Especially now as it is in the media more.

Well said Tic Eyed Hen, you've got bigger bollox than some men on here!  ;D

Thank You guys!!!!

Peter Bryant emailed me basicaly saying that  he 'thinks the message has got round'.

This is no where near a good enough reply. I will not let this go! NOWAY!

I will take the definition of Sport and break it down into further definitions-put it in simple language and do my best to get us recognised as a sport!!!

Here goes the hard work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vallance lofts that is a fantastic idea! Alot less work than what I suggested on other thread!

Do we have any volunteers please???

I never go to Blackpool - maybe I should solely for this pupose - but I can not fight it on my own and most of the members on this site seem more interrested in the annual dance! Ooops SORRY ( IM NOT REALLY) if I have offended some but I love my SPORT!!!!!!

below is the reply to an email i sent to my m.p

Dear Paul

Further to my previous email on this matter, my excellent and ever vigilant secretary Sue  has pointed out to me that the minister Hazel Blears MP answered a question on this matter on Tuesday 27th November 2007.  She said in response to an invitation from Richard Ottoway MP to "join a campaign to fight the pigeon tax":

I am very tempted indeed.  The very first Labour Party meeting I went to, many years ago, was in the back room of a pub called The Dungeon Inn.  As I sat down in my seat alongside six men in flat caps, feathers rose up either side of me.  I later found out that the pigeon club met in the same pub on Tuesday evenings.  I am tempted to join the hon. Gentlleman and I will look into the rules on business rates.  Perhaps we can get together with Pauline and launch a campaign that will really fly.

So it looks as if the minister accepts that it is an oddity and is going to look into it.

Best wishes

Eddie

maybe we could do a petition at the show of the year on a few of the stands i am sure we could between us get 3-4 thousand names if every member of this site signed the petition and got one fellow flyer or indeed non fancier that would be 4000 plus so maybe 6000 could be a better challenge

Any thoughts?????

i think a local tv station could be contacted to show the size of the feeling to this idiotic proposal of the goverment(showing the petition),they want their pound of flesh from us pigeon guys/girls now too!

perhaps a member with better pc skills than i (maybe webmaster) could start a thread with a petition sheet that can be printed off by each member.we could all then go out and get as many signatures as possible and then post the completed sheets to Tic eye Hen . ?

Petitions end up in the bin people have to write to MPs the more they get the more they act .New Labour the working mans party ha ha ha ha ha .

u may be right but if we wrote to our mp quoting the fact that pigeon fanciers from 1 website alone have collected "X" ammount of signatures it might give the letter a bit more weight ?

Hi Paul i got this reply today , im gob smacked  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Dear Amanda Richardson

Michael Foster has asked me to write and thank you for your e-mail and to let you know he is taking this matter up with the appropriate Ministers.  It would be helpful to have your full postal address as the replies from Ministers are often in hard copy and Michael would like to send you a copy.

Many thanks.

I am more than happy to produce the petition sheets, and help co-ordinate to take this further.

HOWEVER

Are we tackling the issue on the angle of:

  • pigeon racing should be classed as a sport (and as such able to get dispensation for this new tax)
  • we are against this new tax

The media have portrayed this story that pigeon racing has just lost sport status (and now liable for this tax), however its the introduction of this tax that is the changing factor, because we are not recognised as a sport.

if non fanciers were also to sign trhe petition that i feel would give it more weight, showing we have the support of non fanciers is price less

will you make up your mind  :-/ :-/ :-/ ;D ;D ;D

i think point 1, it will be harder to fight, it has been put forward to the sports   association  so many times, yet on the other hand it achieves two things,

1 our birds are athletes and we are there personal trainers  ;D

2 NO council tax ;D
