Guest Vic Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Before the days of the Hi-Tech computerised pigeon programmers, (in the days of the swizzzle stick . or was it swivel? ;D) During my secretarial duties, the following result appeared:- Winner. FlyingTime 12.12.12 Velocity 1212.12 I still use these figures from our long one, to give me some idea of the winners velocity. Can anyone out there give me the distance this member was flying? Not a hard one for someone who is reasonable at maths, surely!
Tony C Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 504 miles475yds Correct................. now name the pigeon that done it :o;D
Guest slugmonkey Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 heres how to figure it 12.12.12 = 732.20 minutes 732.20 x 1212.12 ypm = 887514.26 total yards flown 887514.26 divided by 1760 yards per mile = 504.26946 total distance .26946 x 1760 = 474.24 percentage of 1760 expressed as yards .24 x 36 inches in a yard = 8.64 inches total distance 504 miles 474 yards 8.64 inches YES that is my final answer ! You are multiplying even numbers you cannot arrive at an odd answer

Guest Vic Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Jimmy, Yes! Why don't we have more reasonable banter, without descending to the depths of some so called pigeon experts, who think more about big cheques, than little checkers.

Pompey Mick Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 When I first started in 1963 the velocities were worked by long division, thats when Secretaries were secretaries and earnt every penny of whatever they were paid. In the 70's we decided to buy a mechanical calculator for the princely sum of £10.00 and we were bumped! We even got the police involved to try and nail this con artist to no avail. Later the first pocket calculators were appearing on the market and John McLaren was advertising them in the weekly. We bought one for £45.00 (a lot of money then) and it served us very well for many years. Now with computers, race result programmes and now ETS the going has certainly got easier.

Guest Vic Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 I had to type the result onWhen I first started in 1963 the velocities were worked by long division, thats when Secretaries were secretaries and earnt every penny of whatever they were paid. Yes Pompey Mick, I too have been through the mill, with very limited resources, having raced the micks since 1955. During my many years, of secretary, I endured many so called moderations. ;D Thinking back, I suppose at the time we were still creeping forward. I had to type the result onto a rubberised sheet and run them off on a crescent shaped hand presser printer. But after all this, the members still had the result on race day. More than we can say now, with all modern technology. ;D How many members can remember this method?
Pompey Mick Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Was that one of the Linell ones Mick just like a little handheld calculator No Rose, it was just an ordinary calculator which we used for all the calculations.
jimmy white Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Yes Rose! It was the long runs that aged me. ;D ;D trust vic ;D ;D ;D ;D good one ;D [old dad used to use a logarithims book, paper and pencil , up all night doing velocities ,,,,,,well thats what he said anyway ;D ;D ;D
