Hogni Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Just wanted to share with you all some pictures of my new loft and birds. This is an old shed which i paid for with 2 cases of beer, now i have spent some money on getting it ready for the birds but it´s not so much. It´s a small shed which i have split into two compartments, one for my 6 pairs of breeders and one for the youngsters, i plan to bring another shed before next winter to house the yearling race birds next summer, as you can see there is lots of space there for another shed or even many sheds :) The first 2 show the direction which the birds come home from race.
homer Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 brilliant pictures. and plenty of room for more sheds. it looks very remote, do you have neighbours ??

p charlton Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 nice shots and place looks to cold to me ha is there a lot of flyers in your area
Hogni Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 brilliant pictures. and plenty of room for more sheds. it looks very remote, do you have neighbours ?? It is actually about 4km. from my home on an old family land, but it is a big difference for me to only drive 4km. instead of 20km. before to the old loft. And p charlton: no there are not many flyers in that area, 6 or 7 in a 20-30km. radius.
sapper756 Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Hi Hogni, how do you keep your drinkers from freezing up? :-/
timbarra Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Hogni it looks like base camp at everest !!!! shed looks well constructed mate, birds look well to , a credit to you. regards spencer
Hogni Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 Thanks Spencer, yes it looks a little bit in the middle of nowhere. Well, sapper756, i don´t keep them from freezing i just break the ice out of them and put new water in, thats why i use the little gray 2 liter drinkers over the winter, it´s easier to get the ice out of them.
Guest Hjaltland Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 What are the origins of the birds you have?
LISTER Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 What are the origins of the birds you have? van de penguin ;D ;D ;D ;D looks so beautiful there mate bet ya at great peace and one with ya birds
Hogni Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 What are the origins of the birds you have? Well the white cock is the only unrelated cock there and it is a Roland Janssens from John and Alex Mellor. All the other cocks are down from "The little belgian" BELG-98-3251922 which i imported in 1998 and has proven to be a very good breeder, i don´t know if he will be fertile this year but i will try to get some youngsters from him, he got sick with salmonella a few years back when he was in another loft and never really recoverd properly and as you can see on this pic he is getting very old and tired.
superstar Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 I tell you what you would get my vote for fancier of the year win or not! That is one hell of a place to keep birds. Not sure if my birds would die out in those conditions but I know I would

I forgot to tell you about the origin of the hens in the earlier post but 4 of them are Roland Janssens and 3 from the "Little Belgian" family

Lennut Tar Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 I tell you what you would get my vote for fancier of the year win or not! That is one hell of a place to keep birds. Not sure if my birds would die out in those conditions but I know I would I will 2nd that !!!!!!!. What a place to have pigeons etc ;D ;D ;D let alone live there. Your a brave young man, is all I can say & much tougher than I'm now :P Imagine it ??????? could you, when the wind got up to around gale force etc. I could see the loft & pigeons :D 1/2 mile up in the sky heading south at a 100 mph. Terrific photo's. Love the skyline, very interesting !!!!!!. But you can have it all to yourself I'm afraid :D PS No names ;) But I know one place, I won't be going for a holiday :) . Enjoy.
Merlin Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Nice setup birds look excellent,do you have racing as such Hogni, also is there any other bird worries be sides cats and vermin, whats the B.O.P. situation like, wishing you all the best.
Hogni Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 ohh come on it´s not all that bad, ok it´s cold now but usually we very mild winters and little snow and the summers are very mild too, not too hot but always between 10 and 25 degrees, i remember reading and seeing on the news about the summer in England 2007, very good was it? Merlin, here we have very few problems with predators, once in awhile a folcon comes for a visit but they usually cause no harm, we know very few of the diseases we read about on the internet and we do not drug our birds mainly because we have no pigeon medicine here but if a bird gets sick it usually has to go and i believe thats what has kept the racing pigeons of Iceland healthy, what do you mean with B.O.P. ?? Lennut Tar, Take a look at this site and maybe you will change your mind about visiting http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/iceland.shtml
