Years ago, when the paramyxo virus rose its ugly head, we had an option, to vaccinate or not.  But the grabbers, moneymakers made sure that they would have their own way. What has happenned since? It seems to me that more infectuous diseases  are now on the scene, YB Sickness and some others that the vets have'nt yet come to terms with. No wonder we cant get other people interested. But the grabbbers are still there , Aint they? ;D ;D

This is only an introduction into a very, very serious post.

Before I say anything else, let me put my cards on the table.I have never been in this game to make money, Granted, I have sold some pigeons on odd occasions. When I thought they would be of good use to other flyers. My performances from the distance  especially the 500 mile stage compares with anybody in Liverpool in the last 40 years or so.

do we need to vaccinate every year now or is the reason we do is that the makers would lose money if it was a one shot deal, money [along with defra] will sooner or later destroy this sport i think that one of the reasons why people do not start up for, is the expense

Pharmacutical companies who research diseases do not want to cure them, they would go out of business. British heart foundation and Cancer research rely on public donations to study cures. Todays headlines are that a study of anti-depressants show the same results as people taking fake ones. Despite the NHS spending millions each year on them.

Looks like the pigeon industry are just following suit :-/

For the last few years, Iv'e had my own fears,

That "something" has entered my flock.

Their feathers aren't tight, just can't get em right.

And fewer are making the clock.

The reason I'm crying, there's one or two dying,

Iv'e seen nothing like it before.

I don't know why, some of 'em cant fly.

Just happy to stay on the floor.

Now it may not seem much, but I've been in touch,

With the best pigeon vet in the west,

Iv'e sent him two pair, No doubt he'll declare

But for now, it stays close to my chest.

If my own post mortems right. I will say goodnight,

And thanks for the glorious days,

I'll be fishing no doubt, after grayling or trout.

Along with my "Little Matt Hayes".

I have sent, for post mortem, via Amtrax 2 live pigeons that have weakness in flight (no lumps or bumps anywhere) 1 ten day old yb that died last night. PLUS A really up and coming 2yo cock that looked a LITTLE DOWN yesterday, but died this afternoon. No prizes, but what will be the vets verdict you  guys? I am almost certain what it is. C'mon lets see who is right. :(

Vic, a couple of things have been doing the rounds in the last couple of years, Streptococcal Infections is one the other being Herpes Infections. Streptococci can be treated with Amoxicillin, Herpes you just have to let it run its course.

Its pointless me guessing what the problem is because that’s all it would be is a guess.

Was just going to post Streptococus!!

Is this just the fasshionable illness to have?,everytime you have a problem these days the first thing any of the so called experts say is streptococus,so is it a serious new super bug sweeping the country for the last 2 years or is it just an easy scape goat? :-/

Who knows chrissy. Years ago pigeons went light but there was never a named virus/disease given to it. Pigeons unable to get of the ground was associated with a dodgy bag of maize. Hens that just laid and lost the power of their legs was put down to a nerve being disturbed. All these problems now have a given name along with a diagnosis. Have they always been with us but just under a different guise?

Hello Vic,

It is only a guess, but I think they will find either streptococcus or circovirus -- perhaps both.  Sorry you are having difficulty with the birds. Your flock will recover and develop immunities, but some good prospects will be lost. The way it is.

Don't think it has anything to do with vaccinating for PMV -- young bird sickness is now closely tied to circovirus. Different issues entirely.

Cheers, good to see you are still around.

Thanks for your concern guys, I had a  brief chat with the vet, about an hour ago. :( He hasn't finished completing the diagnosis, and he has asked me to contact him Friday afternoon. The guys who have mentioned Herpes Virus, take a bow.You don't have to be a brain surgeon to realise something is drastically wrong within your loft. But what a time, for it start creeping! This vet understands pigeons, unlike some. There are not many vets in Liverpool, that let pigeon flyers through the door. I contacted Adams, only to be told that they would have to send the infected  pigeons away for diagnosis, as they didn't have the equipment at their surgery in Fazackerly. What are they like?  I have complete confidence in the vet  I sent the birds to. So fingers crossed, till Friday. Light a candle for me! :P:(

No! Everything seems normal. Then Wham! It seems to me, that every pigeon is being targetted by an invisible sniper. :( Who has all the time in the world on his side.

sorry to hear about your problem vic,had the same problem last year,in the stock loft and in the old bird racing end,we took birds for testing the ones that were ill testing never found worms,no cocidiosis, tested up the back end the lad testing them was baffled, thought it might have been vermin getting in.two that was tested died the next day.befor they were dying they were just lying on there front and they were rocking back and forward,i wrung the lad up who had tested them and he told me when they are doing that the liver is enlarged, and thats what was causing them to rock.also before dying there were yellow slime coming from the back end.we were left with 3 birds in the stock loft and five in the old bird racing end,my partner and i were frightened to go down the garden didnt know how many we were going to find dead the next day.then all of a sudden the birds that were left seam to put them selves right.i went over one day and my mate said smell that corn in the bin and it stunk ,the corn was taken back,a council worker took a sample away she said ile try to find the problem with the corn she came back next day and said cant do nothing about it as pigeons are classed as a wild bird,to finish off the stock birds and old bird races were fed on one corn and young bird endwhich is on the left of the races, and to the right of the races were young stock bought in for breeding, there wasnt one bird died in either end of the races,so we put all this down to corn i think was contaminated with spors.hope you can understand as ive put it to the best of my ability                            billy

Billy, Thanks. Until some of these guys realise that, I am putting my head on the block, by relating serious problems, without their help, we will all sink together. Perhaps  this is the modern trend. Fxxk You Jack I'm OK. ;)

Hang in there  ;D ;D ;D "Old Fella"  ;) ;) ;) Our sympathy is with you in your hour of need !!!!!!!. We don't want those fishes ????? grabbing you just yet  ;D ;D ;D. Our sport needs every one of us, (No matter where we are) with it's problems that it has etc. So hopefully !!!!! there will be a bit of sunshine (I will send some over) at the end of the day. After the vet finds out, what your problem really is.

Enjoy.
