Guest peter.j Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 Sir, First of all may I express a very special thankyou to Bilco from Wincanton and also Brenda Williams from Kingsbridge for such kindness for freeley giving me young birds for my loft that I've just finished building. The support they have both given me is beyond words. Long live the kindness in the pigeon world. For the past nine years I've been very ill with CFS, ME, but in the last 10 months I've slowly been getting back on my feet again, and little by little I've built a pigeon loft on my allotment in Paignton. It's wonderful to have pigeons again, but I've got to ask who is ruling the skies? I've waited three weeks to let my pigeons out all together, so they could get settled in their new loft, and it's been a long three weeks. Well the day came, 19th July, a lovely Saturday morning. Excitement got me to the loft very quickly and joy was in my heart, but this was very short lived. I let them out and the birds were loving it, enjoying their fly, but what happened next shocked me to the point of holding back tears (heartbreaking). It was carnage in the skies. Not just one peregrine falcon, but seven birds of prey, five peregrines and two sparrowhawks all at once. I watched two young birds killed instantly by the peregrines and another young bird knocked to the ground by a sparrowhawk. I wanted to run and get it, but I couldn't even go and see if it was still alive, because the other sparrowhawk was trying to take the young birds off the top of the loft. I picked up a large stick and defended their loft, this all happened so quickly. I checked the skies before letting my pigeons out, so where did they come from? There was one bit of good news out this carnage. Another allotment holder came over to me and said the young pigeon that was hit by the sparrowhawk had somehow managed to get protected up in a tree. It was in total shock. It took five hours before he would trust coming down. I sat with him in my hand for two hours and everytime he went to go to sleep he would just jump, look up at me with frightened eyes, and as soon as he realised he was safe and protected, he would try to sleep again. If any hawk lover read this take note, pigeons have feelings too. I've called this pigeon King David, he survived the mighty giants of the sky. I've still got pigeons missing, but day by day a few are returning slowly to the loft of equal rights and justice for pigeons, but in the world of man that they fly in, they have no justice. Yours, T. CORBETT
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 very sad i had 3 after my old birds on the alotments 2 weeks ago
Guest spin cycle Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 i read this letter...i can't believe it...what terrible luck. hard to believe that they attack in such numbers at once.
bewted Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 must be heartbreaking to see all that in front of your eyes on first time out of the loft !!!!!
Blue Chequer Pied Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 It must be really tough to witness this and feel helpless to do anything about it. I hope this chap hangs on in there and enjoys his birds without this becoming a constant menace to him. Best of luck to him. Paul.
Guest strapper Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 i had two peregrines about my birds lastnight but they didnt bother with them. think they have had a good feed b4 hand. mr sparrowhawk is here daily either in the sky or after sparrows in the trees around me. i witnessed one sparrowhawk back a few months back go running through the trees like a squirrel..he was hoping so fast through the branches that it looked like he was a squirrel...the agility of them is summut else.
steve d Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 I was in Paignton 3 years ago and witnessed peregrines for the first time in my life, now I just walk out the back door and see them. Just because they aint bothering you dont think you have got away with it, thats how I used to think know we are getting murdered by the bas***ds. :( :( :(
Roland Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 One day, just one day, every fancier of pigeons, and other owners of birds that BOP take, will get a barrel of Pour On between them and treat their' birds ... nah of course they won't! Now that is the real shame!
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 well something needs to be done
