I DO THE SAME AS ABOVE, FOR THE LAST 3 RACES I PUT LIGHTS ON IN LOFT UP TO 9PM AS THIS STOPS THEM THROWING COVER FLIGHTS.

i would agree with this basicly,, but maybe worth a word of warning in breeding y,b,s too early ,,as suggested in other running yb topics running  at the moment as one of the reasons for some losses ,, there are many hatching yb,s in early january [obviously these birds would be on natural darkness] but in my opinion there is nothing to gain by this,, as by training these y,bs  at 6 months old  after the 21st june, would be far too late , and just like latebreds would go down ten a penny ,, in my opinion darkness yb,s are far better bred after the end of jan.. and use blinds to control the darkness times,,,,,,,,, i think the younger the birds are trained ,[12 weeks in these cases] the better , even if its just short distances and learning them to eat and drink from the basket , :)

Don't you believe it! Train them as soon as they are old enough, and have started to range, if you have the time, the earlier the better. Work the darkness hours out, more hours in the dark obviously. But once you decide, open the blinds about 23.00 hrs.  and let them see the sun rise next morning. This is by far the best method, which many have still not cottonned on to. Cheers, Vic.

This always amazes me, training birds when they are ranging freely, when my young birds used to range and by this I mean gone for half a day or more, the last thing I would do was put them in a basket. I found as soon as I did this they would stop ranging. But I have to admit with the hawk problem in Cornwall the birds just do'nt go off like they used to.Shame.

I admit I do'nt know much about the darkness so this may not apply.

i will be trying it for the first time next year

we have never used it and have no intention of trying it , it is forcing the birds to go against nature and is only for those who are desperate to win young bird races,we are quite happy to just race the young birds naturally and let them get some practice in just to home and then just let them mature as nature intended as we are not desperate to win young bird races.

the only way to win week in week out with youngsters, fly darkness and move with the times... fly natural and stay in the dark ages!

do you race old birds naturally or widowhood as widowhood is against nature and fanciers fly it to win races just the same, we do it to give the birds the best conditoin to fly home win or lose

only if you are desperate to win with young birds, it is not staying in the dark ages if you only want to  educate your young birds, but I suppose some folk are desperate to win at all costs but each to their own methods

have only ever raced naturally and it suits us just fine but everybody can chose their own methods to suit themselves

one of the  main reasons why young birds are lost, there bred early december, january time, and there trained at 6months old. They might home but they dont have the same intelligance as the later bred youngsters that you breed in your 3rd rounds, as these are pushed to get into the races. A little darkness tip if you want to practice the darkness when you take them off the dark leave your lights in the loft till 10pm, all youngbird season, this way your ybs shouldnt drop a feather and should hold a full wing the whole programme!

were not desperate but love to win races which is what racing pigeons is all about, does a horse trainer only educate his horses to cross the finish line, dont think so!

but you lads stick to your old hat methods and it makes our job a whole lot easier... WINNING!!!

Only tried the system once, the first time our loft had the yb sickness we wrongly attributed the darkness to bringing this about. We are going back onto it next year 2009 you cannot live with yb teams that are put onto it. So my mate Toshiba had better watchout and be on his toes. Good Luck to all and best wishes. RR.
