GOOGLE EARTH     

 

I have just read in the BHW about a fanciers experience with his Long & Lat and what happens when they put their co-ordinates in the google system. If you are not familiar with what happens you may be surprised to hear that the loft is no where near where you LONG & LAT put you. Yet the results can sometimes be down to a 3rd decimal! Surely in this day and age of technology the correct way of measuring the position of your loft can be done, quickly and at very little expense.

i did this michael, and the cordinates were 5 gardens down from where i actually live...i was wondering ...could i have won a national because of this ....doubt it as i dont enter them lol........but its right m8...they aint the same as done by the unions.

my house is in seven river according to long lat  but who am i to point that out to rpra or club  ;D ;D ;D ;D wondered why my birds are wet when come back

think i know now its not your coorinates lads it google earth that out  i dont complealy understand it  but its all down to how many satalites i think im only guessing that  the rpra units find 5 satalites and are arccurate to about 20 yards or something  its a lot more accurate than google eath so dont worry  some units find 3 satalites and some find 5  i think the rpra are useing the one that finds 5  as far as i know larry lucas put up a post on this recentlly and explained it a lo better then i can

the world clock is governed by 5 satellites, so it must be accurate,  and the GPSS  can find you  under an avalanche  if your are wearing the right  equipment

I have  had my long lat pricked three times at the same address in the last twenty years. three differant maps three differant sets of distances.the variation was over one and a half miles.bring on modern methods thats what i say/

i had trouble with this and in the end it showed up as a map reading error...and its easily done. basically the whole country is mapped onto 'sheets' that carry 2 letter then 4 digit codes....but these maps get 'pasted' together. now in my case they lay side/side so the long. didn't vary but the lat. for each map lay to each side. my loft was on the right hand map...but we read the lat off the left hand scale (thats the way we read ) but we should have read off the right handside as the earths curve causes variation and the scale was slightly different. good quality gps would be ok...but someone told me basic google earth was supposed to be slightly off on purpose ( don't know if its true)
