Guest Freebird Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Mine are the same. I wonder if that garden fleece would work if we wrapped a few layers around and cut a hole in? It's supposed to stop the frost getting to plants so it might. For me, it's easier to carry the water in at night and put it back out in the morning. On my 12 hour day shifts ( 2 X every 8 days ) in winter it's dark when I leave and return home so my wife has to go in and break the ice on the drinkers. Some people don't have daylight hours in winter to check the water so your idea may be worth a try, thanks.
Ian McKay Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 I use 15/25 watt bulbs under my drinkers Only good if you have electricity in the loft
Guest MIKE1957 Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Take a look at Linda's website. This is something I used to do when I lived in Minnesota. Works great! http://www.redroselofts.com/water_heater.htm now that is a good idea
Guest Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Just get some of the insulation board (kingspan/celotex) cut out big enough so birds can stand on it and the drinker fits on it. Tape the edges or wrap it over.

Guest Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 Hi Mick. Don't understand please explain to a thiko(evil) Yoy get some of the board type insulation that they use in house building (for cavity). You cut it down so it is the oversize of the drinker (allow a few inches over), as the board is 2 inches thick and the birds won't be able to reach into the drinker off the floor. Only thing is the board can be toxic if they peck at it so just cover it with a thin material, i just used alu tape to seal the edges. Also don't oversize it too much otherwise the birds will sit on it in the night as it keeps their feet warm!!
Guest Vic Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 Seems to me that Larry Lucas is showing us the way to do things, Once again!

Most people can work things out for themselves it's just some have an open mind and like to way up pros and cons before applying. It's good to know what other people are doing with the birds and sharing thier knowledge after all that is what the site is all about is it not?
