Guest joshdonlan Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Is Aviform Ultimate the best all purpose tonic or can anyone suggest anything else? Im looking to treat my birds in an all purpose manner to boost their health as a few of them seem puffed up. Thanks for the help Josh
Novice Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 As far as I am aware Aviform Ultimate has no antibiotic content. If there is a problem best get Vets advice as sick pigeons are unlikely to benefit from a tonic.
Simeon Turner Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Josh, I wouldn't second guess and just give antibiotics bacuase they are 'puffed up' Get the droppings tested and a few swabs taken, by a vet / poultry specialist, if treatment is required they will prescribe the correct antibiotics if required. DON'T go down the road of blind treating - it will end in tears
OLDYELLOW Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 i use aviform Ultimate , i only used it for the vitamins , i liked the mollases based one better , my young birds havent needed any treating or ailed all season only just treated them last week for 1st time for pre racing. As for does it work i say it must be , but my flock are always treated by my vet 90% of the time its canker related other illnesses ride on the back of canker , good immune systems create better birds that dont ail .
Guest joshdonlan Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Thanks, there doesnt seem to be too much up with the birds all eating and flying, im just lookingto give them a boost to their immune system. Thanks again Josh
DOVEScot Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 The whole purpose of an antibiotic is to introduce antibodies into the system to fight the ones that are causing a problem, unless you determine the type of ones that are causing it you are waisting your time, the likes of Baytril are broad spectrum antibiotics and cover a mumber of bad bacteria but you may not be targetting the right ones. Excessive use of antibiotics allows bacteria to become immune to them and new ones have to be introduced. Probiotics contain the good bateria that should be present in the gut and should be given after any course of antibiotic and some give it regularily to maintain good health We were prescribe Baytril as a first step in treating a sick bird till the tests come back from the vets, luckily it covered the infectious one :-/ Best to get your bird of it's droppings teasted to see the real problem, three years ago I had to cull my whole loft due to inexperience and treating blind, a tough learning curve that I have learned a lot from it 1. Isolate any sick or suspect birds 2. Quaranteen all new burds no matter where they come from 3. Do not treat blind it may be a lot more expensive in the long run 4. Post ALL the symptoms on the forum and see if anyone can help, a puffed up bird could be anything or nothing
Guest joshdonlan Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Thanks dovescot, i will be looking to order a sample kit. Does anyone know who is the best? Boddy and ridewood? Thanks
Roland Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 As Dovescote say's '.......... the likes of Baytril are broad spectrum antibiotics and cover a mumber of bad bacteria but you may not be targetting the right ones'. Remember that the likes kill GOOD bacteria's as well as bad. They can't and don't diffenciate between the two, nor can thay. Besides, too much is spouted in this regards, ones must also remeber that certain 'parasites' bacterias play a vital role, which is more often than not discarded needlessly and in ignorance of course.Take Feather lice for instance, they keep the feathers in great condition with their important cleaning etc. But WE don't like them. The Belguims do... but that again is another story.
OLDYELLOW Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 where do you live ? better to do a full test dropping and a micro culture swab
Guest joshdonlan Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Staffordshire in The Midlands, i am looking to order a sample kit off the internet and send it off.
OLDYELLOW Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 look for a vet hygiene lab or ask local vet to see who specialises in avian in your area im sure someone on here will know your local one

Guest IB Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Just a quick reply to the 'best all round antibiotic' question: think you will find there is no such thing. Antibiotics are usually manufactured to target a specific family of bacteria, and using the wrong one can mean the illness is prolonged. All bacteria that survived that particular antibiotic also become immune (resistant) to it. These bacteria then multiply and all their 'offsping' acquire that same immunity.
Guest joshdonlan Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 do you have a contact for Kev Winter please? Thanks
