grizzle_hen Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Here's a link to the repot on the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7846436.stm
OLDYELLOW Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 well hopefully it will get a couple more pigeon fanciers for the future
dazza Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 A typically badly researched bbc news item, 'the demise in pigeon fanciers is down to changing fashions and BIRD FLU'??? How many parents watching that crock are gonna let there kids get involved with the sport. Dazza
OLDYELLOW Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 to get pigeons on the tv it's self is a feat in it's self , yes the research was at least scetchy however to put a positive view of pigeons in to the public domain in a positive view other than the ferial 'flying rats' that frequent our towns and citys and lothed by the general public is a step in the right dirrection .
tomm1e Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 A typically badly researched bbc news item, 'the demise in pigeon fanciers is down to changing fashions and BIRD FLU'??? How many parents watching that crock are gonna let there kids get involved with the sport. Dazza A very good point. I have e-mailed the BBC.
OLDYELLOW Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 i also emailed the bbc http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7846436.stm i thought the above reports research was at least very scetchy and doesnt truely reflect pigeon racing , the demise for pigeon racing is the likes of computer based games and very little up take by a younger generation , but a hobby thats taken up by the retired , taking pigeons to children in schools is a great inicitive to get a younger generation intrested in this great sport / past time be realy good if you could attend the 'show of the year' in blackpool after all this is the mecca of british fanciers young and old , the bird flue only ever effected the channel racing and a few no movement areas pigeon sales and people buying new birds suffered during that period however i think you need to say that pigeons arent able to contract bird flue as this could put of would be future fanciers Yours in Sport Mark
thunderboult Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 i e-mailed the bbc also, to tell them about the rubbish they mentioned in regards to bird flu being the cause of membership decline, and also mentioned how kids of today are stuck in the house playing computer games . i did tell them also that scientist have tried injecting bird flu into pigeons and they reject it,also mentioned about they're respatotory system and how no other bird as one like them. but you know what the bbc are like, most of what they put out is rubbish and lies.
tarzan Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 in my opinion the simple facts are we do nothing to introduce children adults into this sport ,what encouragment do fanciers clubs regional officers down to the general manger of the rpra do to bring in new members ,.one of the biggest threats to our survival is so called pigeon fanciers . who constantly do anything to stop people joining clubs ,if there good fanciers ,or live on the wrong side of clubs that give them a advantage .they have no chance of joining clubs ,keeping them out ,with no club to compete ,i know personaly fanciers who have become sick too the back teeth of back room lawyers ,sat in meeting with rule books ,destryoing clubs and killing membership of clubs to there demise . ive seen many successfull fanciers leave this sport through ,these disgruntled fanciers who think there experts ,or the club membership owes them something for them been members.whats the future of the sport committee doing to introduce children adults to become fanciers ,answers on a postcard please. when i was a kid sat in a meeting ,no one argued about anything the president was the most respected fancier in the club ,i cannot ever remember a fancier not been welcomed into the club ,never remember a argument over this or that ,it was dreams of wanting to test there birds capabillities of flying longer distances with success ,it was there escape from working down the pits all week ,real fanciers who would shake the winners hand ,the fancier would walk down the pit chest out and big smile for his hero that made his week ,but then these old men where hard men and wouldnt put up with fools like in some clubs today ,they didnt keep big fancy lofts hundreds of pigeons ,there birds had to earn the right to be kept fed ,they didnt have stock lofts full of fancy pedigree birds .they wouldnt sell pigeons to new fanciers ,they would go out there way to help fanciers ,but most of all these fanciers had respect for there fellow fanciers ,sadly those days are gone .

As for those good old days and clubs with members getting on i would like to say im priveledged to be such a club where everyone i would call friend no arguments great discusions and no back stabbing , and i hold my hand out every week to have it shaked lol and im among the first to offer my congratulations when others win ( hoping fer a bit of luck to be rubbed back on to my hand )
The Navigator Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Can't be bad. At least it is positive rather the negative news.
tarzan Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Can't be bad. At least it is positive rather the negative news. any positive news towards pigeons and pigeon fanciers is fantastic. the lads done well bringing is work to the publics attention .
dazza Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 I applaud anyone for taking the time and effort into promoting pigeons in schools or anywhere else - i just feel that all the positives were weakened by the ridiculous notion that in their words the sport has halved in size because of 'bird flu' how ridiculous is that - no one had heard of bird flu until 5 years ago.
stan p Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 les cole was telling me that granada tv have been intouch with him becouse he had been in the evingmail about im been to the school showing the kids is pigeons and he has been selected to breed one for the s chool for one loft race granada wont to do follow up on andover of pigeon les cole has had a verey good year with the birds hope you do not mind me putting this on here
OLDYELLOW Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 any press thats positive and gets pigeons shown in a positive light has to be good for the sport never seen the head of any unions involved with any pigeon storys its always the fanciers at the bottom end trying to recruit and these guys that go into school are taking the gauntlet in hand and doing a great job even if they get 2 fanciers for the future of racing then its worth while
Chairman Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Time for the RPRA to launch their newly appointed Glove Puppet and it's high time he earned his keep.
Guest neil Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 bbc wales radio gave boys from llanelli a 5 minute slot at lunchtime, spoke to i think alyn fellows direct from blackpool and he spoke very well as previous any publicity is an advantage and think what you like about the merits of ets but one of the requests of the grant providers that anyone who recieves such a grant must seek out publicity, only last week our local press phoned requesting information and sent a photographer along so for the first time in many a year people are showing an intrest neil
jimmy white Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 Good report on racing pigeons this morning. yes , very good ,, any reports that show pigeons in the right light , can only be good . i have allways wished they would do a programme on the war pigeons ,leading on to modern day racing pigeons , charities etc,, just to make the public more aware , and to be honest some of the public wouldnt be there if it werent for these gallant birds , who saved so many lives
Guest Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/lancashire/7847690.stm
jimmy white Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 another brilliant article , very good indeed all makes for good publicity , unfortunately there are some fanciers who through jealousy, bitterness, ignorance and sheer selfishness do not help in the upgrading in this wonderfull hobby [and the pity is some of these so called fanciers dont realize this] in my opinion we should all be pulling from the same rope in an effort promote this wonderfull hobby
white logan Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 Time for the RPRA to launch their newly appointed Glove Puppet and it's high time he earned his keep. glove puppet ! earn his keep ! , thats you not being invited for cheese and cocktails , realy !
