Tenny Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 How can I get the egg into box 5 and not risk her rsaising off the egg? She has laid the 1st egg on the floor as I open the door! If I lock her in her box (box5) will she lay egg2 in the nest there and then sit both when i float egg 1 up to the bowl in box5? Or shall I JUST GRADUALLY MOVE THE EGG AWAY FROM THE DOOR DAY BY DAY INCH BY INCH!? Attached illustration may help?
weecunny Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 lock the pair in the box till she lays 2nd egg then put in other egg
Guest Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 lock the pair in the box till she lays 2nd egg then put in other egg thats the best you can hope for or failing that just put a nest bowl on the floor wont do any harm as long as its not in the way
aye ready Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 move the egg away from the door bit by bit, then put a bit of plywood at an angle against the wall whils't she's sitting give her plenty straw to build and she'll be quite contented.had this happen loads times when i flew natural

joe61 Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 tenny are you desperate to keep this egg if yes put under another pair who have laid close to same time or put a bowl in corner with tobbacco stalks in put a couple of bricks round the bowl the only problem you might have is when babies start to leave the nest they might get scalped by other cocks or you could chuck the eggs and start again the only reason she laid on the floor was she could not make the box in time when they tread next time when first egg is due lock them in box with bowl food and water oh happy days
Guest IB Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 I've had them lay in the deep litter a few times. Take the egg and the nest away, and lock the pair in their own box with egg, and nest material they had collected for it. After the hen has laid her second in the box, they will both sit, and you can then let them out.
jonj1978 Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 i havent bothered moving the eggs & they have chipped off brill i have a pair in each section do it....it keeps them happy i thought..
Guest Owen Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 I would put your valuable egg under another pair. Mark it first. Put a dummy in the nest pan in No5 and lock the pair in. No time for messing about do it quickly. The cock should call the hen to the pan, he's got a little over a day to do it. Put a small amount of shortened tabacco stalks in the nest box for him to make a nest. After they settle on the two eggs, you can put the original one back. I hate the idea of birds nesting on the floor because of all the problems that go with it. Some people seem to be able to get away with it. I am not one. Besides, I race widowhood cocks and it is important for them to be homed in on their box. A cock guarding the floor space is not what I want at all.
Peckedhen Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 I've had them lay in the deep litter a few times. After the hen has laid her second in the box, they will both sit, and you can then let them out. I've always done this successfully in the past but, a couple of days ago, the hen laid the second egg in the box but didn't sit them. I moved them back onto the floor and she went straight to them - and, yes, it's right in the doorway! I think that it's best to move the nest only a few inches at a time - if you move it too far they will come off the eggs.
pigeonboyuk Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 leaving be is the best way as long as theres no danger, the tip to move inch by inch is a good one but only if needed, it avoids stress which is very much underated through laying to weaning and is so important. a happy birth is a happy bird good luck
