Bluedoo Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 Not sure whether this should be under health. Had a sparrowhawk attack this evening. Second attack today. Looks like a 10 yo may have lost an eye. Head badly cut and wing also ripped. Very difficult to tell, but "liquid" had been oozing from his eyelid, which is also very badly damaged. Has anyone else got a 1 eyed pigeon, and how do they fare? Any advice welcome. Thanks
Blue Chequer Pied Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 I had a mate had one years ago and it was fine bred no problem. I would get some kind of antiseptic spray onto it quickly. I sympathise with you they are plauging me aswell. Paul.
Tenny Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 At 10 yr old I must assume its racing days are over. No problem breeding with one Eye! Captain Birdseye fathered lots of kids !
ALF Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 You'll have to keep an EYE on him as i had a hen with only 1 eye and the Hawk took her in the middle o the park :( :(
Bluedoo Posted March 7, 2009 Author Report Posted March 7, 2009 "At 10 yr old I must assume its racing days are over" Well they are now. He was stoped as a 6yo. More than earned his corn. Just wonder how they fare around the loft, in and out with regard feeding and the rest of the birds, as I dont have a prisoner section. Thanks for quick replies.

If he is out and blind in one eye he would be very vunerable. I would honestly consider keeping him in or he could be a sitting duck. Paul.
Guest Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 The bird will have no problem adapting to having one eye, just make sure you stop it becoming innfected, personally I would rinse the eye out twice a day with a weak salt water solution.
andrew gooch Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 thay are ok have a blue hen with one eye she never a problem, thay will adapt it will take a few months.
Guest Owen Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 I have a one eyed pigeon. It was a pure Dordin from Nobby Henley of Kingsteighton, Devon. She had been third in the one loft race of the Up North Combine. At least I think it was the Up North Combine. Nobby had her flying out and a peregrine had a go at her and she lost her right eye. He very kindly gave her to me because he likes all his birds to fly out and obviously she would not last long flying in a peregrine area. She used to get nervous but, over time I have won her trust. She is fine here living with the stock hens. The one rule I have when I deal with her is, to never catch her from the blind side. And I never grab at her. I have to admit that, I have wondered if she suffers pain with her injury and, if I thought she did, I would dispose of her immeadiately. As things stand, I will give her a home here for as long as she is OK. One of these days I will get around to making an aviary to house my retired birds. She will be with them.
phillips Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 one good thing mate you will no when he has a 1 eyed cold
Guest IB Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 I have a cock who lost part of his eye, don't know how that happened for sure. The initial 'symptom' was his head swollen to 2 or 3 times normal size which pulled the defective eye partly closed. Could see glint between eyelids, thought his eye was OK. but discovered he was blind on that side, and after swelling went down glint that I'd seen was actually the exposed lens, he'd lost cornea, iris and nicky membrane. He doesn't fly in a group with other birds, he goes off on solo spins. Obviously can't race him, he's used as a safe mate.
