I was wondering, and welcome peoples opinions and veiws on why they are in the pigeon fraternity, where their fathers in the sport ,was it introduced to them due to being a hobby when young, are you starting now as a newcomer and its the first time .

Is it a big interest in your family, how many members of your family are actually interested in the sport..?

maybe this would give us some insight to best possibly promote the sport ?   which areas to concerntrate on...  come on guys input needed.

oh happy days :)

i started over 10 years a go , no family involved in the sport before i started...i kept canaries/budgies etc for over 15yrs b4 that.

wife is 100% behind me,youngest son did come to the club a few times to help out but the fairer sex got him hooked ;)

i think the age that kids should be introduced to the sport is around 9-10 because they are at that age easily led elsewhere.

good view old yellow, i also think children should be introduced at an understandable age, i enjoy the pigeons , my ex brother in law was the one to get me hooked, my son is now involved and is the main guy in the family and his son who is 4 is as keen as him which is good.

i started with no family involved , just daft on birds , i had brought home sparrows crows woodpigeons you name it , and when about 10/11 i caught a few streeters (and before any smart answers i got rid of them lol) after they refused to stay in my rabbit hutch, i managed to get my first loft(7x6) in 1977,my dads pal had birds and gave me encouragement, started racing in 1979, ive kept my son away from the birds as i did not want to ruin his life ,as pigeons is like a cancer, you cant get rid of it/them, but my wee g/son  jack (3)who has ceribral phalsy loves them and will pick out a youngster this year and watch it grow/race ,but my second g/son(josh) hasnt seen them yet he's only 6months

I went to pick up a kitten from a man that had pigeons too, i came home with a kitten and some birds in the same basket!!

I've said before we need to be targeting the 30-45 age group, the ones been married, legs are not as good as they used to be sport wise, needing something to do to get away from the nagging !!lol

i think you're right about the age group. no pigeon history in my family but i've kept poultry since i could walk...still have a few bants. i had some tiles come off my roof...got a roofer in....went round to pay him....he was down the lofts...that was it i was 'bitten'. i had looked on internet about 5 years before and not found anything. thats why i think sites like this are so valuble and offer hope :)

I was brought up in the country and was animal mad from an early age. I have two brothers and like me they had to work hard on the farms. We had no choice. At 12 I got the profit bug and started to breed rabbits for sale at the pet shop in the local town. Then it was chickens. Both layers and killers and the money kept coming in. I bought a ferret and he made a profit on the first day I owned him. Me and a mate caught rabbits and sold them. Then one day when I was 15 a village lad was given some pigeons. All the rest of us went to see what he had. I fell in love that day. I had never seen pigeons before except on the railway stations in crates and street pigeons that looked half starved and filthy. I could'nt wait to get some of my own. Father got me and my brother a pair each. I was chuffed to bits but my brother was not even slightly interested. Eventually, me and my mate caught young birds on a local farm and we built up quite a team. The food was from the farm next door, free gratis. We never knew about racing. Neither of my brothers have been all that interested in animals in spite of the fact that we three grew up in much the same way. I think the love of animals is born in a person and it only takes something small to trigger off the feeling of wanting to own and keep them. My livestock was given away and sold off when I left for the army at 18. But I never lost the love of pigeons and birds in general. It was to be 40 years before I was able to take a serious interest again.
