pigeonman007 Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Hi all I know its the wrong time of the year really but am chuffed to have got my first fertile egg from a pair of birds I got off chucka less than a month ago. Parents broke the first egg, but this one is ok so far. Just wondering if I would need to extend the light a little to enable the parents to feed, assuming the chick hatches. I used to have lights on 14hours a day for my budgies but havent been using them at all with my pigeons. Advice welcomed! Craig
REDCHEQHEN Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 wouldn't have thought it was necessary - birds manage fine in January/Feb without lights so September/October shouldn't be a problem
Guest the gers Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 it all depends on the loft. But always use white lights.
pigeonman007 Posted September 21, 2008 Author Report Posted September 21, 2008 Egg didnt hatch, parents managed to break it about a week before it was due to hatch
peterpau Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 Birds will manage just fine without the lights mate. When I start work it is still dark but I have a look in anyway and the birds often feed in the dark. Lights will affect the breeding instinct and moulting cycle. Leave the lights off. They will need extra food with the cold nights though. Hope you get your latebreds ok.
peterpau Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 Egg didnt hatch, parents managed to break it about a week before it was due to hatch Sorry to hear that mate sounds like the eggs might be a bit soft though. Try oyster shell grit. Give it them asap next time they lay it may be all together different. Hope you get 'em.
