Guest Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 Do you think there is a credit crunch, i see fanciers asking and getting £75+ for YBs, presumably to race, and not especially bred! I don't mind paying good money for birds, but proven birds.

Guest Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 I think national TV has mentioned it, yes there is a credit crunch.. Never really watch TV Spencer, can't believe half you see on there. But surely if there a credit crunch people would'nt be paying this sort of money for pigeons, i'd of thought elec and gas bills slightly more important?

Pigeon fanciers will allways find the money from somewhere to buy birds, personally I would not pay the large amounts being asked for youngbirds no matter what they were off.

All domestic bills and domestic house hold essentials are most important yes your correct, I dont think I am any different to you Mr Bowler. As for people paying whatever £ for pigeons its there perogative, if they earn it they should be able to spend it on whatever they like.
Guest Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 As for people paying whatever £ for pigeons its there perogative, if they earn it they should be able to spend it on whatever they like. But thats my point, if there a credit crunch, people losing jobs, having pay cut no overtime etc then are they earning it? Also are fanciers reducing the price of their birds, as it appears nothing is worth more in a reccession apart from pigeons!

Only the fanciers who earn and buy can answer that for you mr Bowler, have you not recently bought any ? I bought 2 at Blackpool but I could afford them at the time. And no matter what people buy , something is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. if some one is prepared to pay lets say £75 on a pigeon or £2,000 on a pigeon, in their eyes its got to be worth it.
Guest chrisss Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 i gave up smoking so that i can get what i need for my birds there is always a way,to get it done
Back garden fancier Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 Unless you've lost your job, then nothing much has changed? Mortgages down, food and fuel up! I've just got 5 birds from a fancier i've never met before, for £60. Two are direct of fed winners. So they are out there if you look.

So do you think there is a credit crunch? and if so do you think sellers should lower their prices, to possibly give a little back to the sport or do you think its a case they charge whatever they can get away (the same as what someone prepared to pay) with until fanciers can't afford them anymore?
NW USA Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 Buy out of summer breds for less, or purchase eggs. There is an economic downturn for some, not all. The money I spend on pigeons is discretionary spending, if things get tight for me I won't be spending on purchasing new birds.

As I worked in an investment bank for 9 years and one of the biggest in the world, yes there is a credit crunch and more qualified people than i would be able to answer it much better in detail, and its up to people or fanciers if they want to lower their prices, not do i think they should? i guess they dont care what I think to be honest do they? as for getting away with something, you can only get away with something if you done something wrong and its gone un-noticed.. and if they charge £1000 per pigeon. who says its wrong, if people can get free pigeons or cheap pigeons good luck to them, if other want to charge or pay lots of money good luck to them to. spencer :-/
just ask me Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 as i say if people pay the price they must think its worth it have seen birds go for 1000 i wouldn't put in my loft for free and birds go for 50 to 100 that i would have paid a lot more for but sure its that age old problem we cant buy them all due to space and other things
Guest Owen Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 There is a credit crush for a awful lot of poor souls. I can't imagine what it must be like to loose everything but it is definately a reality for more and more. Sooner or later it will affect every one of us. The pound has last value so imported goods will go up. Pigeon Corn is increasing in price and is only part of what is happening. We Pigeon Fanciers are not going to cut back until we have too. Most of us are pretty much fanatical about our sport so we want the best and will keep on affording it until we are unable to carry on. Following on from the problems we have recently had with paramixo vaccine, I hope that that is not the start of the rot. I sincerly hope that the sport can and will survive. I say this because, as we all know, it is in decline and the speed of the decline seems to be quickening. Just recently, I, together with a couple of others are trying to publicise the sport in the local schools and other groups. And we are definately creating an interest, albeit small at the moment. Would'nt it be good if we could lower the average age of British Pigeon Fanciers. I believe it is possible if we set about it in the right way but that is a subject for another day.
Tumley Lofts Stud Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 Prices of pigeons are not always set on profit margin! The cost of corn has risen quite rapidly until recently! But what has been said above, a pigeon (or anything to come to think of it) is only worth what you'll pay for it, is true!

Tumley Lofts Stud Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 Presumably if no one buys your birds they are either too expensive or not good enough so you would have to lower your price or get better birds I guess. Fanciers/all of us who buy things have no direct control over price but if no one bought milk for say Tesco because it was 2p more expensive than Asda then Tesco would either stop selling milk or drop it's price! I'm no market analyist but that's how it seems to me!!!!
