REDCHEQHEN Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 They're not very stable - I have a few of them but came home to find the contents all over the floor with cocks fighting I'd rather change the water every day - even twice a day - than clear up 12 pints of water off the loft floor

Guest IB Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 i used to clean each day then i was at an old guys loft and seen his drinker it had greesish algi on bottom then speaking to a guy afew lofts down i said that old guys drinkers are minging .he said have a look at my drinkers and his was the same. he explaind why so now mine are the same. as for the vote at the top i see that one or 2 are telling lies as we all clean drinkers sooner or later You're not giving much away Way back in the 1960's my dad's drinker had this growing on the bottom. I hated it, and used Vim and boiling water on it to get rid of it, and the skin off my fingers Often wondered what that algae was - what is it, where does it come from and what good do you think the birds get from it being there?

Guest IB Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 algae means the waters healthy clorine kills algae , all pants give off oxygen at night but cant se any benifit from it I'm not sure you've got any of that right, Mark. Tut Tut , you're slipping. I was plagued by an algae that grew on the drain outside my loft here. We've chlorinated tap water, but it took concentrated bleach to get rid of this stuff. Often wondered if there was a connection between it and blue/green marine algae which is poisonous? According to my old Biology teacher, plants give off oxygen during the day and carbon dioxide during the night supposedly the reason flowers are removed from hospital wards at night? But remember this algae stuff in the drinker is under water ...
NW USA Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 algae means the waters healthy clorine kills algae , all pants give off oxygen at night but cant se any benifit from it Are you saying plants don't give off oxygen in the day? I thought that was when photosynthesis occurred.
DUBLINFLYER Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 number one rule in the loft is hygeine cant believe 22% of the vote dont clean their drinkers.... an amazing satistic :-/
Guest Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 i use fersh drinkers everyday and the ones i have cleaned get put into soak in milton fluid or milton tablets for 15 minutes to half an hour ( more if i forget to take them out). lol. ..........................amanda
thunderboult Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 if there's nothing soiling the water i just top them up,otherwise i put fresh in although i don't clean the drinker just empty it.

But remember this algae stuff in the drinker is under water ... Green plants are the only plants that produce oxygen and make food, which is called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis means ''putting together with light.'' This takes place in chloroplasts, which have chlorophyll in them. Chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight. From sunlight, green plants combine carbon dioxide and water to make sugar and oxygen. Green plants use sugar to make starch, fats, and proteins. There are tiny pores called stomota. Oxygen and carbon dioxide enter and leave through the stomata , cant rember which was in day and which was in night . Nearly all algae have photosynthetic machinery ultimately derived from the Cyanobacteria, and so produce oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis
ribble Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 I've two drinkers per section which are alternated, one in use the other washed and left it to dry. Water changed twice per day so the drinker I take out in the morning is cleaned and left to dry then is used in the afternoon. Same as.
vanlink Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 I only put fresh water in when the drinker is nearly empty usually every 3 days to a week depending on how much they drink. At this point I would clean the drinker if dirty but usually it is not so might only clean once a month or more. Wild birds do not drink clear fresh tap water so may be its not so important. Those that have dogs, ever seen them drink the dirtiest water and still live?
Guest chrisss Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 i think that it is horses for courses ,when i was based in germany there was a pigeon fancier in one of the houses behind the camp, i did not have birds myself, but my future father in law did so i took an interest, one of the things i noticed was that his drinker was green and had threads of green floating off the sides [you know like you see on the side of a river, normally where your line gets caught up when fishing ;D ;D ;D ;D,it seemed to work for him,yet if his birds drunk from the gutter of his house he went episcopic, work that one out 8) 8) 8) 8)
valteng Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 carnt tick yes and no , when dirty i clean when clean i dont nyahahaha nice one.... i agree....

The bit about algae is that it's like any other living thing, it needs nutrients to grow. So what is it growing on in the birds' drinking water? That doesn't sound too healthy to me.
