Guest Owen Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 The only thing that matters is the birds. If you have long distance pigeons they will go as far as you want. The main thing that will mess it up is the way you handle the hens. If you show the hens too often early on the cocks will get stale and go off form. And if the hens are allowed to pair up to other hens, the cocks will know. I can't say that I have got my system worked out the way I want it yet, but believe me when I say that the hen has a bigger part to play than you first realise. The other major factor is the feed and, almost as important, the way you feed. A mate of mine is winning with widowhood cocks at all distances and at National level. And he has been doing it for some years now. His pigeons are the best and I am sure that they would win on any system.

Tony C Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 Time on the wing I’ve found is more of a determining factor more than the distance flown, I would be hard pushed to find a couple of w/h cocks from my team to put in ten hours.
sapper756 Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 is it possable too put them on widowhood from the natural for the futher races Not sure about this, I have heard of them being put on natural from widowhood for the distance races :-/
Guest Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 best distance racers ive been in touch with all go to distance on widowhood, tho i hear alot of men pairing them up for the distance
Guest asha Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 is it possable too put them on widowhood from the natural for the futher races Very senseable system for yearling cocks------let them go to the first few races of their yearling lifes, nice and quite sitting eggs, this will take the steam out of them, save you to many losses early season, then just put them on widowhood to learn the game, you will end up next year with 2year olds ready for the job in hand
taffacre Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 if your widowhood cocks are coming well on the system why pair them up? mine only flew 9o miles as youngsters and all flew 195 last weekend, there is no way i am going to stop them yet, they must fly 300 miles as yearlings, thats the only way to test them. And they will stay on widowhood.
Ronnie Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 i paired up my cocks for the channel last year i won the channel averages in the club. the last race i just scraped in though with a hen as my cocks where just to worn out.
Guest Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 how far do u send them 350 miles 500 miles Depends on the birds and the day. If they fly 350 miles in 8 to 10 hours with no probs and coming back without being knackered up then they could fly 500, but that extra 150 miles can be a killer, especially if its a hard day. They don't have to be your first birds back from 350 to fly 500 either, they just have to look like they could fly it again when they come home. No good if they taking 2 to 3 days regularly on races 250+ either. Of course the 500 could be a blow home, say max of 10/12 hours, so you need something with a bit more speed in.
