Guest monkeynuts71 Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 MAIN ELEMENTS OF THE OPENING CEREMONY Today, Rule 58 of the Olympic Charter briefly mentions the protocol that must be observed at the Opening Ceremony of the Games, as well as the opening speech by the host country’s Head of State. The other important features of a ceremony are: • The parade of the participants; • The speech by the President of the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games; • The speech by the IOC President; • The playing of the Olympic anthem and the entry and raising of the Olympic flag; • The last stage of the Olympic torch relay and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron; • The symbolic release of pigeons; • The taking of the Olympic oath by an athlete; while watching an advert for e-on last night i saw a clip of the release when we hosted the games in 1948. maybe we should make more of this. Did anyone else know this was in the rules????

Roland Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Yes they are released at all the games, a symbol of peace. Pigeons of course as to doves. Best one that remember was the Moscow one.... Can't off hand recall China's. Though a great Pigeon Racing country in parts.... doubt many left not eaten lol. By both the people and the B.O.P.

They are all pigeons as opposed to doves or they are all doves as opposed to pigeons as pigeons are direct descendants to rock doves, people just like to call release pigeons "doves" as it markets better as love or peace doves which in the main are Logans and Busschaerts. Where as White doves "Barbary or magician doves" on the other hand have very little or no homing instinct so not very good for repeat releases in business The queens jubilee had 50 white pigeons released to mark the occasion and I know that one of them was owned by "the Fifer"
