Babybird Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 Some of you may have read the other night about one of my white hens and the big dried up wound on her back from a hawk attack and a dropped wing, well the scab came off yesterday and she was looking o.k but today she is only what I can describe breathing like a cat purrs.I had one of my neighbours round to have a look and he didnt know what do either so i have put it in a separate cage. is this a secondary infection? what should I do?? :-/

W.D. Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 Try treating for canker 1st then for respiratory, sounds like its picked up an infection.Sounds like you are doing your best for it to keep it alive. Is the wound ok,no smell or puss coming from it? Does the noise sound like its coming from its chest when you hold it up to your ear?
blaz Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 ok tomorrow morning open her beak have a look at the back of her mouth if it looks like canker then you need to treat right away.if you dont have any treatment for her bring her to me i have tablets for it .if it is not canker she has taken a secondary infection then it is best to kill her. this is my opinion and what i would do with my own birds.

Guest Owen Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 You said that your bird has been hawked. Could you have made a mistake? Are you sure that a cat has not got at the bird? If a pigeon has a cat bite, it usually has an infection that turns to blood poisoning. Cat saliva is deadly, even to us humans. The bird will look to be overcoming it's injuries but die later of blood poisoning. The remedy is to treat your bird with an antibiotic for 10 days. Baytril is best but amoxicilin is also good. I hope you have not left it too long, because once the bird has a build up of poison in it's blood it will probably die. It will important to follow up the treatment with probiotic and multivitamin. Don't forget to remove the grit during the treatment period.
chickadee Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Canker would be brought on by the stress of the attack not the attack itself, check it's wound area and joints to see if it has caught an infection and check it's throat for canker, also you can smell it's breath for canker :-/

The wound is pretty deep but looks to be dry and healing, wouldnt be surprised if the wing drop is due to lack of actual muscle tho!! :-/
Babybird Posted October 11, 2009 Author Report Posted October 11, 2009 Looking and feeling a bit better this morning here is a picture of the wound and wing
