Newbie2020 Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Whats the best method of preparing the birds for the race on saturday from today Thurdsday. My plan is to let them out T 4pm this afternoon for a fly, then feed 1oz of young bird mix at 6 o'clock tonight and then feed them as much maize as they want to eat at 10 o'clock friday morning. Is this sensible or anyone suggest something better?
REDCHEQHEN Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 How far are they racing? What time is basketing? Personally I don't feed straight maize

pjc Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 if they are youngbirds and its there first race they won't need any extra, normal feed on thurs and then feed Friday morning will be fine.
Guest puresoontjen Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 80 miles and basketing is 5pm no food friday or very little food light up till 12noon
Newbie2020 Posted July 2, 2009 Author Report Posted July 2, 2009 so I let them out today 4pm and then they get 1oz or as much as they want at 6pm, with no feed on Friday?
Guest puresoontjen Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 80 miles and basketing is 5pm only 1oz per bird very light food if thay dont eat it by 12noon thake away
pjc Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 As much as they want tonight then pick food up and give them 1/2oz early morning.
Newbie2020 Posted July 2, 2009 Author Report Posted July 2, 2009 So its fly at 4pm, feed as much as they wont at 6pm (young bird mix) and then give them a small amount of conditioner or something at 11am tomorrow?
Guest puresoontjen Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 only 1oz per bird very light food if thay dont eat it by 12noon thake away all week 1.2oz.. friday none on that day if only sort race any race over 100miles feed up till 12 noon
Newbie2020 Posted July 2, 2009 Author Report Posted July 2, 2009 what about feeding only maize tonight as much as they want? Is this going to be better than feeding the young bird mix?
pjc Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 forget the maize until they need it for a long race!
Guest puresoontjen Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Is that 1.2 or 1/2 m8? I have been feeding 1oz per bird each day upto now this is how i feed 1.2oz per bird evry day thursday all that can eat friday small race none... over 100mils feed light food 1oz up till 12 noon
Guest dogeon Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 maize is high in carbs and there would be no bennifit to giving it to them on a friday, thursday at the latest for the carbs time to turn to into muscle fuel, but not complete maize try half/ half
Guest puresoontjen Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 hiya m8, is that 1.2 oz or 1/2 oz? do you feed in hopper or in ther box
Newbie2020 Posted July 2, 2009 Author Report Posted July 2, 2009 I feed on the clean floor, get the birds coming to me
Guest puresoontjen Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 I feed on the clean floor, get the birds coming to me then you dont no what bird is having 1oz or 2oz or more some might not have 1/2oz
Newbie2020 Posted July 2, 2009 Author Report Posted July 2, 2009 Its just the same as if you feed in hopper you dont know either! The only way is to feed on the perch I guess, but not practical when you have 60 young birds. But I put in 1oz for each pigeon and when its gone thats it. So if one wants to eat faster than the others, then the others will need to eat faster next time! lol.

Tony C Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Feed 3/4 oz each Thursday split into 2 feeds then 1/2 oz each Friday am. Dont exercise them Friday.
pjc Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 What you are looking for is to get some experience under the youngsters belt for the future if you are a new starter they are your race team for the next few years. Just feed normally all week inc thurs, and then half feed early friday morning and you won't go far wrong. Don't excercise friday but don't bung them up with carbs they don't need at this stage and are not going to use.
