ive tried to train in the dark many times and i know about a dozen distance fanciers that do it on a regular bassis the idea is not to realy get them to fly in the dark(allthough some will) but its to train them to get up and on with the busniess at first light and as tammy says many are winning because of it many a bird has been timmed long after dark

Sat waiting with my Grandfather many year ago waiting for his 2 national birds, 1 dropped at 10.05pm and its son dropped at 10.10pm!

You will find that releasing birds quite  late that they will not be wanting to go astray  and get home asap  that way they will get the line of flight pretty quickly . But still think they need some experience first and do a bit of ranging then would start this training . Have tried it in the past and found it to be actually quite effective so wouldn't knock it  ;)

I believe these are the pigeons of Lowic Brothers.

A bit pricey for these liberations and most are dark chequers.

I have done a lot of liberations just before dark knowing they will not get home. They have then come early next morning. It encourages them to roost and then come home early. A lot of the greats have done similar things. What do you think happens when your birds do not come home in a day? They have to roost. In terms of the birds welfare well lets face it they are racing pigeons; they are a means to an end. Yes we look after them as best we can and we do not want to see any harm come to them but they are still there to race and that’s what they are breed for and have evolved to do. If we wanted to protect them then we would not let them out of the loft. Birds of prey do not fly at night so perhaps we should all race at night. To quote a respected friend and a very good local fancier ‘In this sport if you want to win then you have to get an edge’ an edge comes from going against the grain and pushing the boundaries.

That may well be your opinion but to many fanciers they are life itself and without their pigeons many wouldn't want to live, so reverse the saying to 'its an end to a means', a meaning for living.   :B

You can't just take out a few words from my post because that then changes the way it was meant to read. In other words you have taken it out of context. When you race your pigeons then you enter into competition and they become a means for that purpose just as racehorses and grey hounds. When they leave your possession then they then have risks and dangers which you except or else you would not send them at all. If they are not then keep them at home as pets. As for the birds being some ones life I would perhaps not argue with that point but perhaps suggest that ‘birds’ are peoples life and not the ‘individual birds’. I would wonder how many only like a bird once it performs well and select out birds that are not right for purpose. I love some of my birds don’t get me wrong but they are there to work. My last post is with reference to some thinking it unacceptable to release birds at night. Some would suggest that racing pigeon’s full stop is unacceptable. Peta (animal rights) want pigeon racing stopped and when they get racing pigeons in they cut their rings off so don’t always think it is jealous fanciers cause its not.

i just watched it last night i think it was wrong i would like to correct my last post it was allmost dark when i liberate but the idea is to put them up with little or no chance of getting home on the night and having to get up in the morning but they must have a chance to find some where to roost for the night with out flying into anything

WELL THEY WON JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING THERE WAS TO WIN IN LANARKSHIRE AND SOME GREAT RESULTS WITH THE SNFC  ;)

There were few better than Hughie thats for sure and as far as I recall he never lost a bird by doing this. Saying that it was many many years ago and even after he stopped doing it he was still winning, he was just a great dooman!
