Jeams Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 If you get the pigeon before they can fly 10 days is enough.but if they has already flew for a couple of days in their previous owner, the best way is cut of one of their wing flights, then let them out ,before dusk drive them into the loft, after several times them will know the home,or you should cage them not let them out.if are the old pigeons, the best way is cage them never let them out,or you will lose them forever
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 i wouldnt cut the flights i would soap the flights
les Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 well raced pigeons get lost in the snow ,so it must be imposible for unraced birds to find their way .every thing looks so much the same ,ie,all white with no land marks ,i would say that this is your problem ,that is asuming you got snow like the rest of us
Jacobasmith Posted January 16, 2010 Author Report Posted January 16, 2010 I am over the moon!! I just got one of them back after nearly a week of heavy wind, rain and snow He is looking rather week/thin, so i am about to give him a few peanuts (high in protein/fat) is this ok? Thanks for all your suggestions guys, it feels good to be a member of such a helpful place.
Roland Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 Depends how far away the loft is that you have to collect from. If only a few miles etc. then let them out, have a open door every three days. Job done. they need to feel secure - and free to coming in and out as it suits, especially if you intend to race them. Freedom and secure brings on contentment. After a the simply reality of being able to break ANY pigeon is to let it like the new loft more and wanting to stay. No amount of time / eggs or young etc. matters a jot. That's all my eye. They will go if they are content with your set up, no two ways about that. Like those that fly of the top of the loft. And they will - like any pigeon on any system - only 'Race' to speak if they WANT to get home. First thing is creatig the desire for them wanting to be there. Being locked up doesn't help that. Yes place for an hour or two in Pannier on roof a couple of hours each day to have a look around. But that again is only for your peace of mind. Letting them walk in and out on their own time is the way to go. Still means you won't break them all of course, because they won't all wish to stay.
