ive always loved young bird racing in the past but i am going into distance racing and the people ive booked young of wont be pairing up untel feb the 14. due to this i am thinking of not racing and just giving them loads of training. the main reason behind my thinking i might be to late to get them on the dark. plus ive been reading a lot of the distance racers are not to bothered about racing young birds i do have a few young due to hatch of the sprinters this week bit they are going to breeder buyers would i get away with just traing the young

they only need 6 weeks on darkness they dnt need to be bred earlyer to go on dark they can go on dark up to first week of may

one of the lads who breeding them for me said they would be ready i just dont want to hamer them and give them time to develop

Paul, i have bred later than that ,trained and raced reasonably well .(also on the darkness) the decision is yours mate , but it wouldnt bother me too much.  andy.

No problem with YB's bred from Feb pairing. If you're interested in distance racing, give them a few races, maybe to 200 miles, then set them by for next year. With distance birds, you don't want to be knackering them at this YB stage, as they will have to be allowed to mature to be able to tackle the 'distance' . YB's will learn just as much from a few shorter races, than pushing them right through the programme. Putting a YB to too great a distance can be it's un-doing. JMO.

I'd leave them to moult naturally, give them a couple of races just for the experience of mixing with other pigeons overnight and being mass libbed.

14th february pairing up date is fine to put your youngsters on darkness i do it every year, i always find my best young birds are the eggs thats laid after this period, hence the reason ive moved back my pairing dates to 14th february. Like the others say it is good enough to put them on the darkness as they only need to be on the dark for six weeks.

do what one of the best distance racers in the country does ,[WILF REED]train them to 30 miles a few times ,then take them on a few  saturdays  to 50 or so miles where race birds are crossing from all different race points ,and let them up in different lots at different times in amongst the race birds heading home ,they will get the best education you could ever want ,also less disceases, and you will soon thin the rubbish out .AND YOUR THE ONLY ONE TO BLAME AT THE END OF THE DAY ,NO SAT HOME WONDERING IF THE CONVOYER HAS MADE A ERROR,ps keep it to your self as it is a tried and tested method ,DONT TELL ANY ONE  ,ATB les,

Hi, If you pair up the 4th Dec, Eggs 14th Dec, Y/bs 2nd January hatch, Do not need to be on Dark, Y/Birds will be through the moult for the Young Bird NATIONALS, I WAS 1st + 2nd Perth Y/B 328 miles, the birds were not on the dark, JUST EARLY BRED, you have to breed early, STOCK LOFT ONLY, If you race the distance up to 800 miles, it makes no difference you are only breeding out of your stock birds.

All the best

bit early to say that bakes as you have never raced before so you will be hopeing to race the full program but alot can go wroung with young birds and you could get wiped out after the second race and only be left with two then you are not going to push them all the way throw and lose them just to be in the same boat again next year , my advice would be to ask who you are getting the young birds off what they do as when you get to know a family of birds you dont need to hammer them as young birds , most of my sprint widowhood cocks only get two races as they are moulting and growing but they will get every race as a yearling two year old three year old , i dont believe in thrashing young birds as i get more enjoyment out of the old birds and would rather win old bird races

i would just school them throw gently as with distance pigeons they have a long racing life in front of them , id still be inclined to get them in one or two races as youngsters just for the experience ive allways found this better than no races at all

my take on distance racing is this school them send to 3 or 4 races , dont burn them out at the yb stage , the love of home is the biggest thing you can give ybs and they'll pay you back later , i dont fly on darkness with ybs all natural im not actualy racing its just training / schooling for things to come ybs are the future of the loft and there only ybs for a short time  ;)

Paul - Would be very suprised if Geoff would suggest you take the Theelens steady as young birds as he doesnt - His pigeons have to race and very rarely will he not send a young bird unless he is private training it with the young bird national in mind.

Last year we had young birds moved over at start of June and fly up to 170 odd miles without bother - There first race was first week of August.

Best of luck

lol he never he said get them on the dark and send them all the way

the big difference is ,this geoff has got a team already ,paul is just starting to get a team , he cant realy aford to loose to many if he can only house a small team ,and the way young bird racing is going ,he stands a very good chance of loosing them ,just my thoughts
