Guest cosmic dave Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 OK so the loft is taking shape now, and I'm at the what type of roof stage. I can get corrugated roof sheets at a good price as I have a mate that's a manager of a builders merchant. I can get black bitumen or clear plastic. I was thinking the clear stuff because it will let in plenty of light but will cats on the roof upset the birds ? in which case black sheets may be the one to go for. Has anyone else used corrugated roofing sheets ? Thanks once again David
owen101 Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 my dad use to have them on his roof he did not rate them much
Guest cosmic dave Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 What was the problem Owen ? do you know ?
Guest big pete Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 carefull with clear roofs can get hot, IF we ever get any sun!!
OLDYELLOW Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 beter to use the polycarbonate roofing clear sheets like they use on consevatorys
owen101 Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 he did not like them as the clear ones made the loft very hot and the other ones collected alot of leaves and debris i use the 6 by 4 sheets of wood
Guest cosmic dave Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 Its cost tho oddyellow !!! :-/
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 id use the clear but then inside i would make a false roof so you could have a sliders to let in how much sun light you want , so if on darkness you can darken the loft then let loads of sun light in , as for heat in there that will not be a problem it will just make the pigeons rest and lay about all day just what you want !
owen101 Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 check around your local allotment they always have a few polycarbonate ones there mate
Guest cosmic dave Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 I could wait for one of our famous East coast gales and see whats blowing down the street We had a large trampoline blowing down the other day
holmsidelofts Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 I wouldnt use metal corrugated sheets on there own as they condensate, i have them on my roof but have a wooden plywood roof underneath them this stops the condensation happening.
Guest IB Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 Would not have a clear roof. A cat on a clear roof would terrify the birds. You are removing a feeling of safety feature from the birds, they can shelter in the loft feeling safe that they cannot be seen from the air. The other thing is you would have birds flying over all the time, casting moving shadows through the loft, mine are jumpy enough at that when it happens when they are outside in the garden.
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 thats why you would have a false roof inside , as for cats last time a saw one my great dane was throwing it round the field think they where playing
walterbmasson Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 thats why you would have a false roof inside , as for cats last time a saw one my great dane was throwing it round the field think they where playing go for it all clear birds love it you will never give them enough sun keeps them in peak condition iam all clear champion ;D ;D ;D
Guest stevie-b Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 if the black tar sheets have the same profile u can miss out some on the front and put the clear plastic ones in
Guest cosmic dave Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 thats why you would have a false roof inside , as for cats last time a saw one my great dane was throwing it round the field think they where playing I know its cruel but that remark made me chuckle
pjc Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 the best option i've found for a flat roof is 18mm shuttering ply on 2x2 battons running front to back of the loft, this will give you a 2" air gap front and back and then cover with the corugated bituman sheets. The wood will prevent condensation and help keep the loft at a more constant temp. If you realy wanted to you could a couple of 2' squares, fill those with twin wall and then put clear corugated over the top, this would prevent condensation but allow extra light with a sliding shutter if you wanted to control the light.
mark croker Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 beter to use the polycarbonate roofing clear sheets like they use on consevatorys This is the best i have ever had, tiled at the back but you could use metal sheets and polycarbonate at front but the coregated stuff would do, mate sure you put shutters in to control the light and heat, there is no point in making do, i would say go for the best, if it takes longer atleast you wont have to change it
mark croker Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 The reason i say that do it first time, i built a new young bird loft 3/4 months ago i front of my old bird loft, it is coming down this week to build a new one next to the old bird loft with the same roof, it make a differance in condition of the birds and the ventalation is so much differant, i put some smoke bombs in it and the ventalation worked ok, but not as good as the old birds roof
Roland Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 Best you can have is a clear roof.... provided no cats can sit aside looking in like.
gulkie Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 iv had the policarbinate on my roof for years and there brill the cats don't like walking on them, i got mine from a very cheap soarce, my bro works for a skip firm £0000, i do know the sheets can be very expensive but they are good, corrigated sheets after a time get very brittle and strong winds destroy them.good luck m8.
