Jacobasmith Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Hi, I only have 1 pigeon (the others didnt come back) this one hasnt been coming back for aroud 2 weeks at a time for the past 2 months. :'( Today he came back, but he brought another bird with him, the bird is young, isnt ringed, and looks farely clean, the droppings are normal colour. 8) The question is do i keep it? :-/ And how can i get them to come back quicker? :-/ (he used to take around 8 hours of being let out a day) and most people say about 45 mins is normal. I'm beggining to think he has been out on the pull for Valentines day.
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 might be one of his young birds lol prohaps hes got a nest some where else
pigeonpete Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Hi mate, the simple answer is no dont keep it, most probably a streeter. If your after some birds i will help you out later in the year, whats your plans with them? And is the bird you have got a cock or hen? Are they proper racers? All the best Pete
Jacobasmith Posted February 15, 2010 Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 Thanks for the generous offer, but i have already be offered a few birds from local fanciers. They are both racers. Because the one i originaly had was too old to be ringed, i was going to get another pigeon and breed from the pair. This new one looks like a cock as he had a squarer head and he drags his tail. My old one was a hen. I am not sure but i was originaly given 8 youngbirds, 7 of them didnt come back i seem to remember 1 or 2 of them being white, maybe this is the one. It defineately looks like a racer but looks a bit smaller becuase maybe it didnt feed aswell. (i am not really sure) I get my rings soon, so i hoped to pair these and see what happens. Is all this a good idea?
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 i think you need to see a member of your club and get him to see your set up ect and advice you, as on the net we carnt see much lol and it sounds like you could be going about it wrong so see a member or have you got any gd books to read about pigeons ?
Guest gladdo Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 all up to you mate and depends all what you think .... best of luck but if e was mine for racing i not need to say where this bird would be and it would nt be pulling for vallentines day !!!!! mikey
pigeonpete Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 donr know how far you are awy from lenwadebob? But he is a top man, and im sure he wont mind me saying pm him. He will tell you straight what to do with your 2 birds if you are interested in racing pigeons And will give you some sound advise :-)
Jacobasmith Posted February 15, 2010 Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 Ok thanks guys, I am going to my club meeting tommorrow so i will ask them, Have you any thoughts on the length os time he stays out? Thanks again
Leroy Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 It sounds like he is living somewhere else when he isnt at your loft mate, either keep him in for a while with a new mate and rear some young birds which might bond him to your loft, or move on and get some new birds this year. If you reduce his food to try to get him to bond he is likely to go back to where he has been getting food when he isnt at your loft Lee
Guest stb- Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 I would not be keeping a bird that lays out all the time . It will end up bringing problems back to your loft . looks like its hanging aboot with streeties. full of trouble them things . one bad apple comes to mind
Guest IB Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 A strange one. Homing pigeons come straight home after they are let out. That's why they are called homing pigeons. If your pigeon is unrung and stays out for 2 weeks at a time, then it is going somewhere else, either its gone feral and become a streeter, or someone else has had it in, and is keeping it in. Bringing an unrung cock back with it sounds like its paired up too, if that came in no bother, it is likely to be a streeter, homing pigeons don't usually go readily into other lofts. Whichever case, neither bird is of any use to you, and you should rid yourself of both. Well before you get your next batch of homing pigeons, work out / find out how to settle them properly to your loft. Properly settled pigeons will always come home. And bear in mind that you may have mistaken 'this' pigeon for your lost one. Pigeons do look alike, its the ring ID that confirms whether its yours or not.

I did offer the young lad all the help he wanted as did my son last Summer, even offered him youngsters, invited him over to look at my birds and set up and offered to go over and have a look at his set up, but was told he was going to get help from people in his local club. Anyway Jacob the offer still stands young man.
Taylorsloft Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 might be one of his young birds lol prohaps hes got a nest some where else haven't we all ;) :X
pjc Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 from what you have said you have no control over your bird. It has now picked up bad habbits and has got a second home which will be almost impossible to break it from visiting. If you get more birds then do not let them out with this bird as he will only take them off to wherever he goes to and you will be wasteing your time with them.

Guest lee duffy Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 Ok thanks guys, I am going to my club meeting tommorrow so i will ask them, Have you any thoughts on the length os time he stays out? Thanks again its sounds like to me hes heading back to the loft he lived in befor you got him/her . more than likely its looking for a mate a bird does not like been on its own and you will prob lose it id keep it in untill you have more birds and if yyour trying birds out to get them flying try one out every few days not all togeather
Jacobasmith Posted February 18, 2010 Author Report Posted February 18, 2010 Just to let you know, i am getting another 2 birds tommorrow, and another 1 on saturday. I will get more soon. So in other words, what you are saying is the more birds, the more chance of them returning? thanks again.
Guest spin cycle Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 like bob & rocky i also offered...with same result. thats in the past though. IMO you need a 'settling cage' surrounding your trap. i just use some simple aviary sections tied together
