pjc Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 make sure there is something in the bottom of the bowl to stop legs slipping. It should correct itself or it could be deformed.

leighton1984 Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 you need to tie the legs so they do not go out after a day or 2 they will set and but a chicken egg next to the pigeon this stop mum and dad pushing down 2 hard.

gulkie Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 make sure u put some kind off material in the nest bowl so the youngster get a grip to stand up ie[straw- tob stalks- or felts]and place hens egg in bowl also tie legs together not to tight.had a couple last year and corrected both, ok now. good luck m8. ;)
Guest IB Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 I've only had the one case, good few years back now, down to inexperience both on my part and both parents:- clumsy yearlings (bad sitting posture), poor nest material so youngster hadn't anything to grip with its feet, and nothing to help support it in nest (single reared). I caught mine a lot earlier than 12 days and corrected it by swapping it with another healthy youngster, the other parents stood over it and firmly lodged it between their feet, giving the youngster everything it lacked in previous nest. The other youngster also help train the clumsy pair how to 'sit' a youngster properly, if it felt them sitting on it, it bumped them up till they were again standing over it. So now my single reared youngsters get a nestfelt, and I leave a pot egg in the nest till they are around 10/12 days old. The other thing to watch out for is angel wing.
Guest Owen Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 there are some things you can do if you want to try to fix the problem. Do what leighton has told you. In addition put a nest felt into the pan and make sure that there is nesting material available. The nesting material should be course stuff such as birch twigs, tabacco stalks or something similar. It is possible that this youngster is suffering from rickets(bendy legs). Give your birds a mixture of grit, clay blocks and vitamineral every day fresh. Mix all this up together in a bucket and feed FRESH EVERY DAY. And if possible, try to allow your birds access to natural light. It is important for the birds to be able to have access to the vitamins that are created by the oil on their plumage. If nothing else, you can improve your chances of rearing good youngsters from now on. Finally, this bird could be beyond your help so be prepared to have to get rid of it. However, the parents should be capable of breeding others of the same colour.
