Pigeondoll Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 Any1 got any thoughts Why is the RPRA allowing Monopolies on clocks and clocking systems, some of these prices are unreasonable due to the lack of competition, for e.g. if you want to buy a certain ETS system there is only one man you can buy it from. If they wanted to charge extortionate prises like £200 per ring, if you wanted it you would have to pay it as there is no completion. Didn’t BT have this problem some years ago? As any one questioned the legality of this issue.
OLDYELLOW Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 most clock names have many agents in different areas and there are other makes of clocks so theres no monopoly as its an open market , be a different case if only allowed one clock and one maker to distribute to all which is not the case , as from price of systems and rings im sure you can query if the price there charging is a fair price via a consumer group
Pigeondoll Posted March 5, 2010 Author Report Posted March 5, 2010 so if i want to buy a new t3 i have to got to linell, if i want unikon i have to go through Ray Knight, so where is that not a monopoly
OLDYELLOW Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 so if i want to buy a new t3 i have to got to linell, if i want unikon i have to go through Ray Knight, so where is that not a monopoly linel are makers of a clock they developed so only they have the right to make there clock they designed and paternt , unikon are selling clocks through an agent also , but you can buy benzin taurus , bricon and a few other makes of clocks so 1 you have a choice and theres no monopoly
OLDYELLOW Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 and perhaps better to have agents as these clocks could be faked and manifactured badly copies so having agents actualy stops this happing to buyers by ensuring the clocks are sold are the very ones they have made not done in a sweat shop faked in another country with there brand name on

The only reason any company can sell a product at any price is they must have people willing to pay it. I used to sell sports equipment and I got up to 40% commission from the manufacturers. I could sell cheaper than the manufacturers just to get a contract from a sports centre I could cut the price by 20% which made me a bit of money but 20% cheaper than the manufacturers. Same with any business that is why you can buy a Sony tele etc from the likes of Currys cheaper than you can buy from Sony shop :-/

Guest Brendan Day Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I think the problem will arise with the rings, as you can only use rings from the ETS maker, if you use a t3 and need thimbles you can get cheaper thimbles than those sold by junior or if you require rubbers you have a choice and can shop around. If you want Bricon, Unicon or what ever ETS rings you have to get them from the company and only that company no matter what agent you use! We are at the minute having subsidised rings and are apparently the cheapest in Europe, how long will this last? I suspect once the ETS sales have reached saturation point in the British market then we will see the cost of rings going up and perhaps the service charges will come to light.
Novice Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I firmly believe that the ETS rings should be sold through the unions. If we do this we control the price of the rings and also dictate whether or not we are prepared to use their system. The entire thing was rushed through without thought----just like the new life rings. While at Blackpool show this year I noted that Harkers who make Hormoform were selling it for a higher price than Barnsley Lofts who were directly across from them. Funny old world.
Pigeondoll Posted March 8, 2010 Author Report Posted March 8, 2010 Why cant we go direct to belgium to buy the system? linell dont make the clocks they are made by Junior in Belgium, we asked junior a few years ago to purchase 40 T3s and were told that we had to purchase from Linell. Is this true of the ETS?
