Tony C Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 With lights and dimmers you could open the loft up at noon and close it down 10pm.
Guest frank dooman Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 just count back 8 hrs from when it gets dark thats when you darken
demolition man Posted March 11, 2010 Author Report Posted March 11, 2010 just count back 8 hrs from when it gets dark thats when you darken That don't sound right even if it got dark at 10 this would mean you need to darken at two in the afternoon :-/
demolition man Posted March 11, 2010 Author Report Posted March 11, 2010 Anymore ideas plz Will take that as a No then
Guest mick bowler Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Well i'm new to the dark but going to do my own thing based on my own theories! Birds will have 10 hours light (and only be on it for 8 weeks at the max starting 19th March ending 14th May), so that my birds will always see dusk. I will also open up 1 hour later from end March to allow for extending nights, and same again end April.
demolition man Posted March 11, 2010 Author Report Posted March 11, 2010 Lets put this another way if i darken my birds down at 7pm and open them up at 7am, do you recon this would be ok, i'm trying to get a system sorted around my work, if i do these times the missis can help me out when i'm on lates and earlies Regards

sapper756 Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 I have been using a darkness system for 5 years now, I do it to suit my work routine, so I darken after the evening feed on my return from work at 4.30pm, and take off darkness before I leave for work on the morning 8am, and I have had more than my fair share of success with my young bird team, this year alone I was top prize winner and won the young bird average in my club. So I must be doing something right Good luck m8 be in control of your birds, don,t let them control you
Guest stevie-b Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 its what suits you aslong as there is more hours of dark than light in your loft

andrew gooch Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Whats the latest time in the evening i could put my youngbirds on the dark and what time would i need to lighten them up in the morning Regards been using the dark since 1999 i open them at 815 thay are let out 2 fly at 4 i get home at 5 call them in fed and waterd by 530 back on the dark by 545, works year in year out no probs.
Guest redlad24 Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 i did it last year, darkened them about 7 in the evening , got my father or mother to open them up at 11, this way i think is better for the working man and when the hour goes forward then close them up at 8, used to darken them at 5, i wouldnt be there, the pigeons got into dirty habits then landing on neighbours roofs and getting hawked, it made no difference to mine last year anyway, one of my better seasons
kirky Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 been useing darkness since 1986 aways done 9 till 5 can vairy time to suit as long as thay still have 8 hrs day light.
Guest redlad24 Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 just make sure theres a good flow of air mate and 1ce you cant smell the pigeons in your loft and you'll be grand
Guest vander mungo Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 need to rely on someone else helping out if your working ,not just down to timers to give correct hrs of darkness you have to have exersise times worked out, and feeding times as well. not easy for the working man. been there and won with them, she dont keep well now. GOD BLESS THE WIFE
