korhil Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 hi, ive just seen a bop carrying a collar dove not half a mile from me, i know there are sparrowhawks near here, but didnt know they carried prey ? was it a peregrine ? thanks
Blue Tooner Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 Pointed wings - peregrine rounded wings, long tail - probably a Goshawk Don't think a spaarowhawk could carry a collared dove very far

korhil Posted May 16, 2009 Author Report Posted May 16, 2009 it looked to have pointed wings? and was quite dark ? if that helps
b.massey Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 Sound of a peregrine to me. Most sparrowhawks hunting at this time of the year are the Cocks. And they are too small to cary big bird. They usually take small birds. Hens are very big but should be in nest this time of month
doomaloon Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 how about following it and observe the cute cratur feeding its young a joy to behold
korhil Posted May 16, 2009 Author Report Posted May 16, 2009 why dont we feed you to it ? if your so concerned!

Guest Owen Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 Sounds like a peregrine. Do you know if the prey was taken in the air or on the ground? If it was in the air it would have been a peregrine. Another clue would be how the prey was carried. Peregrines carry their prey right back under the tail. Yet another indication is the fact that the peregrine will scream after catching if there is more than one of them.
cheeseman Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 ive, had a goshawk take them off the loft, and sparrahawks tend to kill them close to ground, and of course mr and mrs percy take them in the air.
korhil Posted May 16, 2009 Author Report Posted May 16, 2009 dont know where it killed it ? but it was def carrying near its back end ? looked almost like a fantailed bop !
