demolition man Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 Yesterday i had what i believe was my first hawk attack as i came out of my loft all my birds flew from the bath straight into the loft into the loft, as i looked up this HAWK swooped then landed in my nieghbors tree. DO HAWKS FEED AT THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY OR ARE THEY OPPERTUNISTS?

MsPigeon Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 I have found that some years and some times of years are worse than others but there will always be birds of pray lurking around. They seem to figure out any schedule, I think the trick is to not have a schedule. But I have realized there will always be oppotunists around as you say, when you and the birds least expect them. I've gone to just letting my birds out all day everyday and they are smarter and faster for it. Lately we had a redtail trying to get em, they just flew circles around it, playing, and teasing it. It finally just landed on the roof right next to them, tuckered out. I have a friend who also uses decoys, but he uses grazing geese decoys which he moves around the yard daily. They looked pretty cool too, like the real thing, canadian geese. He said they work! He got them from a sporting goods supplier. Here in the states he got them from Cabelas. Good Luck Carol

Guest Davy Fleming Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 Standing at the lofts yesterday morning with wings 04 and his uncle and the sparrow came out of the trees over the top of us and right into another tree a few minutes later was chasing a doo right up the park then 5 minutes later we heard the crows making a noise then they come out of the trees but by this time the sparrow hawk and got back to where it was originally so don't know how the fly monkey got back there as we were looking for it but the 2 crows fought with it in mid air and got rid of it thank god . Was just trying to be polite when I said fly monkey ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D. you can imagine the poor wee soul hope it didn't go hungry ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

billt Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 i just wouoldnt let them out this time of year m8 sparrow hawks very active this time of year but when are they not :'( :'( Would be more active June /July when feeding young, up to 5 in a nest, open loft suits my birds have very few losses here in West Wales, shutting them in for the winter would leave them unfit to escape attack
leighton1984 Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 birds fly out at 11am till 12:30 hawk hopefully feed by 11am and start again around 2pm but when its been a very cold night i do not let them out . if you let them sit on the top of loft you going to get hit from hawks.
