Walter swanston Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 HI, I let out my race team here in Dumfrieshire on beautiful sunny morning today, it was their first outing since Octoberthe time was exactly 10 a.m.The sparrow hawk struck at 10.25 a.m. I rescued the pigeon Ok but took all day to get the rest of the birds back into the loft, I am not complaining but I have put an enormous time and effort into the pigeon fancy over the past 20 years and the never ending struggle against hawks is very depressing.

Guest bakes Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 i had it bad round my way had a pair of sparrow hawks in local cemetry 500 yards from my loft pair of goshawks in nearby woods and a pair of pergrines in nearby quarry was an absolute nightmare last season couldnt let my birds up without looseingh them to pob only had one attack this year so far pair of pergrines lost a bird due to it last time i seen the hen she had a pergrine right on here *expletive removed* and had a bird come back ripped to bits slash's all down the birds side of chest just under crop on the birds back tail gone half its wing gone god no's how the lad made it back from that a good stitch up and rest all scabbing up now and walking round loft like nothink has happen strong birds pigeons they take what ever anythink through at them and bounce back.but pob are getting to much now way to many pigeon fanciers dropping out clubs now due to it yet nothink will be done about it due to to many people been brain washed by rspb saying pob dont do no damage and they keep on beliveing it by the time they wise up they wont be no pigeon raceing due to the increase in pob in some area fanciers now have to breed double the amount of ybs just to be able to get a team together. all the best.

holmsidelofts Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Sparrowhawks are fairly predicable birds and tend to attack from the same direction, and its normally done with surprise. We had problems with them but theres an easy answer, put up strawberry wire across the area that they attack from, its difficult for them to see and after a while you dont have the issue anymore. once the birds see the sparrow hawk and they are in the air they aint much of a problem to a pigeon, its the surprise attack that catches pigeons out. Jas.
