Might sound a silly question but if you send a hen that is sitting on a 5 day old yb to a race then won't the young bird die? I only have a small loft and i need all the young i can get. Is it just a chance that the cock may look after???

The cock is just as dedicated a parent as the hen, he will take care of it while the hen is away!!

when flying birds on natural you should always have a plan as to what to do in the event of a lost parent I always try to have birds raising only 1 chick this makes it easy to move the baby to another  pair should the need arise as an added bonus these chicks will turn out healthier especially when the weather gets hot

Two interesting themes sprang up on same thread. Have 'split' them under altered headings.

That is why must WIDOWER'S don't fly hens... though it matters not a jot, any rank hen there will do great. After all it's the Perch, the nest box that is the real essiential reason when in 'Form' they home well I believe.
