madmaxlofts Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 i think it would be unfair to the pigeon not to basket train them they need to know where the water is it would be like not training them and just sending them to the 1st race i think dehydration is a main cause ov any young pigeon going down
sapper756 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I believe it to be a very important part of a youngsters education. I always give them a couple of days confined to the basket, fed and watered.
Guest Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I've mixed feelings on this one. I've done it but down at the club on marking nights tried till I was blue in the face to get YBs to drink - yet to see it happening. I get the impression its late on in their yearling season that they actually drink freely in the basket..
jimmy white Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 would say basket training very important indeed ,y birds should be basketed regularly from day one [when separated ] in uncrowded conditions, given plenty confidence in the basket, to eat drink and be completely at ease, used to put coloured rings on and basket about 8 at a time in a big basket, and repeat this with the others, when it came to training time found they went through far less stress , being very quiet and still in basket
THE FIFER Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 u cant give them too much, also the drinkers on the baskets is very important.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 young birds spend plenty nights in a basket long before first race, and are usualy put in the basket when old birds are racing as they do not get out that day
Guest Hjaltland Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 Rightly or wrongly I wean y/b's in the basket until they are eating and drinking, so they are completly at ease with the basket and being handled - then on into the section.
Guest Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 I've done it but down at the club on marking nights tried till I was blue in the face to get YBs to drink - yet to see it happening. Couldn't agree more with comments so far, but as I said above, we do it with one thing in mind, and that is to set the bird up as best we can for the race basket. I trained mine but even I couldn't get mine to drink [or anyone elses in 18 baskets x 28 birds] at the time it really matters, in the race basket. So should we be water training in a different way? The post about 'training to find the water' says it all for me; mine during their life have to drink from a jar, 2 different types of drinker, a trough hung on the outside of the nest front; a trough hung on the outside of the basket; a trough hung inside a spare nest front placed somewhere in the loft; and I used to move this 'water' all around the loft so that they had to look for and find the water ... will be going back to that this year. And although the thread is about YBs, should we stop training them? I try to water train at all ages, for example, when the birds are first paired up, there's a jar of water in with them; when they've settled down, that comes out and a trough of water is hung on the outside of the nest front for a day or two; and I repeat that the week before any race that has more than one night in the basket.
