Dont know if this helps but I'll be taking y/birds away around the 9th of April and they'll be put on the darkness.

As a total novice please advise me. The darkness system delays the young birds losing their flights so they are in prime condition for racing in July. Is this the reason people shut out the light?

mmm, i got this totally wrong last year, first year of trying it, dont mind admitting it, not to sure still what i did wrong, whether i didnt have them on it long enough? not dark enough? but they really started to moult well and were looking good, as soon as i took them off darkness they fell to bits by middle of july?? hope i get it right this year,

well my young birds have been on it sine february and im taking the system away in first or second week in june but maybe earlier cuz mine ave almost finished the moult now

YES MY YOUNGSTERS HAS BEEN ON IT SINCE THE 2 SECOND OF FEB BUT IT WAS FOR THE ONCES THAT I AM WEENING OFF NOW I THINK I WILL PUT THEM ON UNTIL THE LONGEST DAY IN JUNE THEN TAKE THE BOARDS OFF THEN

you can take them off earlier if you think they have completely gone through moult then they shud be ok but i think another few weeks wouldnt do ne harm just wait until there are no patches in their feathering and their neck is trhat beautiful purple and green

this is my first year by myself but before that was with my dad for too many years so now flying solo as i got married and moved away and am starting fresh with the young birds

well this is my first year of the old bird racing so looking forward to the races ahead  looking forward to friday again to get them back in the basket

i have just put a couple on the dark yesterday they are breeder buyer birds ,they are being set up for our last race the breeder buyer ,248 miles ,

i dont normaly race young birds ,the system im using to darken them is the one GARY INKLY  uses ,and he dont get beat that often in his club ,it is to lock them away at 4 in the afternoon and when it is dark go back in the loft and take the blinds down ,that way they get up to a sunrise every morning ,this is done for 6 or 7 weeks  the same can be done for the later races with a few old hens .ATB les
