kirky Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 1st april as thay need to compleat body moult 6 weeks before first yb race when thay are taken off darkness.
hannigf Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 As a total novice please advise me. The darkness system delays the young birds losing their flights so they are in prime condition for racing in July. Is this the reason people shut out the light?

little sam Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Aslong as you can get hm through the moult before training starts, So thats about 6 weeks before training
pigeonpete Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 mmm, i got this totally wrong last year, first year of trying it, dont mind admitting it, not to sure still what i did wrong, whether i didnt have them on it long enough? not dark enough? but they really started to moult well and were looking good, as soon as i took them off darkness they fell to bits by middle of july?? hope i get it right this year,
ritchie1 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 IS IT TO LATE TO PUT YOUNGSTERS ON TO THE DARKNESS SYSTEM NOW OR IS IT STILL OK TO PUT THEM ON FOR 8 WEEKS
Guest pigeon82 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 well my young birds have been on it sine february and im taking the system away in first or second week in june but maybe earlier cuz mine ave almost finished the moult now
ritchie1 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 YES MY YOUNGSTERS HAS BEEN ON IT SINCE THE 2 SECOND OF FEB BUT IT WAS FOR THE ONCES THAT I AM WEENING OFF NOW I THINK I WILL PUT THEM ON UNTIL THE LONGEST DAY IN JUNE THEN TAKE THE BOARDS OFF THEN
Guest pigeon82 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 you can take them off earlier if you think they have completely gone through moult then they shud be ok but i think another few weeks wouldnt do ne harm just wait until there are no patches in their feathering and their neck is trhat beautiful purple and green

les Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 i have just put a couple on the dark yesterday they are breeder buyer birds ,they are being set up for our last race the breeder buyer ,248 miles , i dont normaly race young birds ,the system im using to darken them is the one GARY INKLY uses ,and he dont get beat that often in his club ,it is to lock them away at 4 in the afternoon and when it is dark go back in the loft and take the blinds down ,that way they get up to a sunrise every morning ,this is done for 6 or 7 weeks the same can be done for the later races with a few old hens .ATB les
