Guest tomo68 Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 Does anyone know the easiest way to find out the sex of young birds.
Guest ljb107 Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 as soon as they mature the hens will lay eggs! I can tell the difference with badges just send me some pics of whatever birds they are. Lloyd
Guest IB Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 Would agree that watching the maturing bird's behaviour especially around old birds, is the best indication of what sex the bird is. I know that people look at the shape of the head but some families have henny-looking cocks and cocky-looking hens, mine's is one of those.
Guest ljb107 Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 true you always get a bird that wants to confuse you! ;D
Guest chrisss Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 true you always get a bird that wants to confuse you! ;D i have one of those ,i have had her for 3 years, this year she paired up for the first time, now i know she is a hen, most of the club guys [the ones who did not offer to "take it of your hands mate"thought it was a cockbird
Guest tomo68 Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 i had 2 white birds of some one he said they was paired i thought great but found out that they was 2 cock birds they would fight a lot which got me thinking then he started chasing a hen around the loft and the other has paired up to another hen.
Guest chrisss Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 with me it was/is a belg rung van der brooke [wrong spelling ;D ;D ;D]it was paired to me a bit strange i know, but i found "mr right" for her so now i know
Guest tomo68 Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 its the same as the one in my picture i thought it was a cock bird it paired up to me everytime i went in the loft it would go to a nest box and start roaring for me i would stroke her it would go mad lol now it is paired up i now know its a hen
ChrisMaidment08 Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 loverly when they are in love with you
Guest chrisss Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 its the same as the one in my picture i thought it was a cock bird it paired up to me everytime i went in the loft it would go to a nest box and start roaring for me i would stroke her it would go mad lol now it is paired up i now know its a hen thank god its not just me that has that problem it was getting a bit "odd" as i have two hens that do it, one of which is "stock" the other got lost for 5 days, and when she got back she flew straight to me and started to display [ i had to walk into the loft with "her highness" on my shoulder before she would get of for a drink]
Guest tomo68 Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 i breed her last year shes always been close as i lost the hen when she was not that old,ive had mates that have had the same problem
Guest challengerlofts Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 Been buying hen from Louella's internet advert. Everytime i've got it, it's a cock. One time, i've choose Staf Van Reet Cock. The same day, i've ask for a Kirkpatrick Yellow hen to pair with. It's showing is a cock. No change to pair, no chage to produce. Got still lucky, out 6 got 1 hen. Really need how to find, especially when they're still yb. Have a nice day.
Guest milkyal Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 Didnt some chap up in scotland sell something that told you the difference, called it a sex indicator cost about a tenner. If my memory serves me well
rooster Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 a piece of cotton tied to a 1.77 or 22 slug pellet , hold it above the pigeon , if it goes round its a cock , side to side a hen , and costs nothing to make good luck ,

If my memory serves me well you can make your own , works same way , you need needle and cootton , about 8 inches will do ,and hold above head of bird roughly about 1 inch , if it circles its acock if it moves back and forth its ahen , best to test on known sexes, as i may have got it wrong way round
Guest ljb107 Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 i don't believe in those things, i've seen people usng them on lovebirds and finches at bird sales and people just laugh at them using them.

Guest IB Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 Well there are two other methods, and not of the witch-craft or old-wives tales type either. (1) If the bird's outer toes are same length = hen; one longer than the other = cock. (2) I like this one, could cause a riot in an empty house Turn the young unfeathered pigeon away from you, sit it in the palm of the hand, hand held at eye level. If the cloaca is 'frown' shaped ^ then its a hen; if it is U shaped, 'smiley' then it is a cock.
Taylorsloft Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 hold the pigeon in your left hand turn the bird upside down put its head in the palm of your right hand let go with your left if it rolls off its a cock if it stays there its a hen .you might have to do it a few times to get it right
PigeonTracker Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 Does anyone know the easiest way to find out the sex of young birds. When one does the cooking, the other sits on his backside watching the soccer. ;D sorry, couldn't resist trying to lighten the mood with what happened to the Gill boys. Most of the other posts pretty much answered anyway.
