Guest Denny Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 What do you think my chances are of getting all 14 birds back into my loft tomorrow morning as they are all perched on the roof of the house tonight? Daughter let the birds out this evening about 6.00pm thinking that they would soon be back in! Yeah right! ;D ;D Several at a time have tried on many occasions to fly down to the loft roof, look down on the sputnik, only to take off and fly back up to the roof to join the remaining birds. Yet there was no problems on the other occasion when they were out in getting back into the loft (that time there were only 5 that managed to get to the roof). It looks like they have not managed to work out how to manoeuvre individually in a flock of more than 3. It is only the second/third time for some as the last squeaker only managed to lift off the loft roof this evening. I fed them this morning a scoop (about 260g) at 7.30am. Am I feeding them too much? They are still on breed and wean, should I look at changing the feed? They are now about 30/32 days old. Time I suppose will only tell. How to turn grey over night eh!
Novice Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 Classic signs of having had a scare--possibly hawk. They will come down and in in the morning. Occasionally if it is a sunny evening this can also put them off.
Guest vining45 Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 your not on your own theres 18 out of 42 in the loft tonight the others keep doing fly pasts hope they come in tomorrow but once in the sky they dont belong to anyone
blaz Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 you will get the in tomorrow as all will be hungry
pjc Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 if they are used to a morning feed, they will be waiting for there breakfast. When you go to the loft in the morning call them down and i'm sure they'll come dashing down off the roof. At least being up on the roof they are safe from cats etc.

What is the best thing to do - leave the loft door open together with the sputnik just in case they decide to come in very early in the morning (I know it gets light about 4 to 4.30) or just leave the sputnick open?
pjc Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 leave the sputnik open only if there is no risk of anything getting into it other than the birds! If there is a risk of anything else being able to get in then leave it closed until you are there to call the birds in.

Just close the trap at night then rise early. They will not come down immediately.
Guest Denny Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Update - 12 in the loft and only 2 dirty stop outs for a second night - I think they are the eldest birds out of the 14. Only problem is they are eating the tree seeds that have flown into the guttering which is not helping them be hungary enough to ome back in! :'(
Peckedhen Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Phew! It's a hard call now, if they were older birds that had had a fright stopping them trapping, I would keep them in a week before letting them out but, I'm not sure with them being young, a week might see them too strong on the wing.......maybe a couple of days in???? What do the 'brains' on here think?? :-/ :-/
pigeonpete Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 well dont know about brains pecked! but make sure when you let them out next they are super hungry! wont harm them for a day! they will crawl all over you to get in, plus the ones that have nighted out make sure you dont reward them by feeding them when they do come in! they will be first in next time! ;-) hope you get them all back! i know its hard but try not to be to soft with them, show them who is boss fromn the start!.
ritchie1 Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 a night on the tiles is good for them wont do them any harm
just ask me Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 dont worry too much they will come in as when they see u go down to feed the rest im sure they will know what is going on and pop in
Novice Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 If they are still out and you have a hungry youngster in the loft I would put it out to give the others confidence. Once all 14 are indoors give them a day to settle then put them back out in small groups. Keep them in on Saturday if you are on a line of flight.
