Tropicman Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Right as i explained in a earlier topic some of our birds had been fielding anyways we took action and bought nearly every mineral and grit under the sun and they stopped for a while but recently they have been landing again but on a rockface near the field :/ i walked up to see if there were any mole hills or anything like that and nothing just grass and rabbit poo so what could it be do you reckon ? our two next door neighboors young birds range the same with ours but none of theres are landing ours just break off and land but not all of them do it just around 8 -10 do what do you guys and gals think ? help !!
pjc Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 if you are sure they are getting everything they need incuding maybr putting some trays of soiil outside the loft then it has clearly become a habit they are unlikely to break!
Tropicman Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 maybr? and what do you mean trays of soil ?
pjc Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 dig a couple of splits from the garden for them to pick about in.

pjc Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 if you don't wan't them there then every time thay do land there get some bangers (firworks) that will stop them from going down in the filed or shot gun!
Guest puresoontjen Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 or shot gun! ;D that will do the same
Guest IB Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 I agree with puresoontjen's first post. If they land anywhere you don't want, chase them. Lob a brightly coloured ball in amongst them. Stop bad habits becoming routine.
Guest phillip Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Try soft half baked building bricks . Crush the bricks to small pellets and place inside the loft in trays . We call it baked Kimberly bricks here in South Africa . We also mix course salt and mixed crushed seashell with the pellets You will have to discourage them from landing in the field
Tropicman Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 thats true but by the time i get up there theyve taken off its right on a hill as where in a valley and about a 20 min walk from the loft :/

DAVIDL Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 hi tropicman, you said you bought "every grit and mineral under the sun"....were they keen to eat it ? and if so are they still eating it ? i once had birds that were feeding ybs and they werent eating the grit i had given them so they were pecking around trying to find it themselves, and also landing on the house roof to peck around on the roof tiles......then i bought some "matrix" which has everything they need in it, and they love it.....

Stop bad habits becoming routine. use a double barrel on them and that will cure the problem 8) and as i only live in burnley i will come over and bin em for you ;D
allenyeates Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 I use Natural pikstones and dryed seaweed (gathered from a clean beach and dryed on washing line) never had a pigeon go fielding and I live out in the country.
dudley Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 buy a bag of charcoal same as they use for barbecue crush it up put them a pot in the loft sorted, ken
just ask me Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 i have no comment joke ;D ;D ;D i gave my advice the last time it didint go down too well i really dont think there missing anything at this stage i think its more of a habit now more than anything
BLACK W F Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 i new a guy he took a cat over and let the cat off when the birds landed done this a few times and was ok for a while then back to it a gain theres only one way to stop it as if its the same ones all the time they will end up taking the whole team down ithink you will need to cull the culprits
Tropicman Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 Well They are keen to eat the grit all the time after they've been out like but where they land its just rocks and rabbit mess and a tad bit of grass :/ ill try and upload a pic see what you guys think.
chrissy Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Maybe the birds are ready to start training?,being taxed abit more mentally and physically?,once they start being trained away from the loft you generally find they stop messing about and just come straight back into the loft.
chrissy Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Forgot to say our birds get every mineral/supplement and concoction known to man and they still prefer eating the breeze blocks in their avery
Guest Owen Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 There is no doubt that your birds have lacked something and have developed the habit of fielding. There are things you can try. Pick stones, clay blocks, various mineral supliments and sea salt. I think I would look at this situation as an opportunity to learn something about your birds. Rather than try to frighten them into submission, I think you should try to find the solution by offering them the thing that is causing the problem. I am certain that if you can identify whatever they are looking for you will have the key to giving them the best health suppliment possible.
Tropicman Posted June 11, 2009 Author Report Posted June 11, 2009 But thats the thing ive been to where theyve been fileding and theres nothing there but grass and rabbit mess so could it be any of them ?
Guest Owen Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Of all the things that you have had suggested to you, I would certainly try the sea salt. This is because, if you are giving them a wide choice of minerals and suppliments, they may have developed a taste for salt. they would get that from animal urine and possibly slugs and snails. Failing that, I would reduce the food to force them to pay attention to your discipline. However this is finally resolved, I think a awful lot of us would like to know. So can I ask you to keep us all informed.
