Guest slugmonkey Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 How far are you starting YB's on 1st toss and why
Guest numpty01 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 i beleave a bird flys around home and when running covers a good enough distance so they go 40miles sometimes its great others its not but hy you lose um from 10miles ;) ;)
OLDYELLOW Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 i take mine on a 5 mile toss for a few reasons , one is it gets them used to been in a basket for a short time as this can be quite stressfull for them and near enough to where they would be normaly ranging so will feel secure knowing the area and its dangers also gains there confidence that been in a baskets not so bad and increase the miles / time they spend in a basket
Guest slugmonkey Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I seem to lose more birds under 10 miles than if I go out past 20
OLDYELLOW Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 i lost none and even have some very young ones going

Tony C Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Started racing in 1989 and have always started them of at the same spot which is 14 miles to me.
Guest tom123 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 first toss for mine 2 mile then 9 mile then 14 mile and been there ever since for the past 5 weeks but everyday ready now for first race sat
Guest numpty01 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 well that one never called back anyway :'( :'( :'( :'(
swilcox Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 1 mile (not really sure why but always have) 3 mile 2 x 5 miles 2 x 10 miles 2 x 15 miles and then 20 miles 4 times a week unless they go on the trainer later in the season when the mornings are darker!!!! Done this the last two years and my ybs have broken records and twice won Champion Yb 07 08, Runner Up Champion YB 07,08 and Young Bird averages 07,08 upto 5000b. It not so much the distance you train its the whole package and most of all health, dont think this years ybs will match my past two years mind!! Stuart
pigeonpete Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 has anyone ever sent to the first race without any training? i.e flying well round home so didnt bother training them? Do recall someone telling me a while back. That if there doing 3 hours around home every day and are basket trained, no need to waist petrol or time?? never fancied trying it myself :-)
swilcox Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 If my birds done 3 hours around the loft Percy would be a fat bugger!!!

Guest shadow Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 always started mine at 20 miles and lost the odd one but kept them there until they beat me home then gave the 6 from 40 miles once racing started dropped them back to 20 miles twice a week I never was a keen Y/B racer prefering to educate them for later life :) :)

Guest dogeon Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 3mls then 7mls then 14mls and so on up to were you would like them ie 40mls i think is plenty.
pigeonpete Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I know someone who does that seems to work well enough for him gets them out of places like Pau so it can be done Fancied trying his system myself and see how it works i would guess birds would have to fly well at home for you I wouldnt dare do it though! to scared lol. does seem some sense in it though, as you take them 18 miles which im hoping to do tonight, 15 mins to basket them, 25 min drive and same again back, and they beat me back and in the loft, or if i let them out tonight instead fly for hour and half no problem.?? so which is doing them the best and me? as traffic will be mad tonight :-)
