Guest milkyal Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Had approx 60 tosses ranging from 5mls to 75mls, but around 20/25 at 15 mls. Learn them to home quick for grub.
frank-123 Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 17 tosses i reckon my last today looks a safer bet with a flag the peregrine's are haunting the doo's sent 45 today 20 mile i reckon there must have been 600 birds away in total 5 land very jumpy the next batch10 birds 20 mins later come back within seconds peregrine above them forcing them to gain height and circle the peregrine with seagulls coming to the rescue chasing the *expletive removed* away last bird home 3 hours after liberation from 20 mile looking forward to the first youngbird race not :o :o :-/
mart Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 how many times a week do most people train their young pigeons?
gooner Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 i dont give mine anymore than 3 tosses a week as i feel you can give them to much, there is a chap near me who has been training his younguns twice a day every day for the last few weeks and all tosses from 20 mile IMO that is to much there only babies
Guest Paulo Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 They have had two 50 mile ones from ripon and the rest have all been 12 miles to 25 miles depending on what site I'm working out of
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 7 tosses, 3 from 13 miles 4 from 19 miles this for us is the usual but have seen us sending all the young birds to the first race with only being in the training basket twice at 13 miles, may add that it was one of our better young bird seasons winning young bird average flying against an average of 2500 to 3500 birds per week. I do like to think we are all racing homing pigeons, so is there any need to have 20+ training tosses.
Guest milkyal Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 I do like to think we are all racing homing pigeons, so is there any need to have 20+ training tosses. There is if they dont fly at home!!!!!!
Guest Paulo Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Mine fly well at home but I personally believe that training muscles them up better than just flying around the loft. It doesn't have to be miles last year I was YB averages runner up and my birds only had 12 miles twice a day. In his book east to west Kevin Hurst recommends 40 mile chucks 3 x a week for YB's!
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 There is if they dont fly at home!!!!!! If a pigeon doesn't make it home from a race when the others have it's not because it had 7 or 20 tosses it's because it's not good enough to start with. subject to hawks doing damage.
ryesway Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 two chucks at 7miles three chucks at 12 miles three at 18 miles three at 22 now had one today at 25 miles took 33 minutes to come so well happy .one more toss at that then jump to 40 miles then first race 65 miles on the 1st of august
Guest Grasshopper Lofts Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 mine have had near on 40 chucks started at 8 miles now upto 30 where they wil stay twice per week whilst racing
Guest IB Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Well thats my 1st round had their 8th trainer to 20 miles tonight; tomorrow night they're marked for their 1st race from Coldstream 62 miles on Saturday. Weather is looking good for the race.

carlsberg Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 mine have had 3x5mls and 14x20mls 1st race this week @ 55mls
THE FIFER Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 had 5 tosses up tilnow dropped 1 youngster,
magpie Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 If they've been ranging, short tosses are a waste of time and money. Ours go straight in at 20 miles and go there a few times before the first race/trainer at around 45 miles. So far this year both teams of early and later-bred young birds have managed it with only two dropped out of 70. In fact our worst loss was a couple of weeks ago before training began when the younger team were hit by a peregrine shortly after leaving the loft. They scattered and 25 disappeared, only one reported about 80 miles away.
paul10121968 Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 FEW just one missing now. is it normal for young birds to go off for nearly 3 hours? dont worry i know its frightning but their just ranging(exploring)itll go on for a couple of weeks even during training, they should settle down then.its good for them.the only downside is that being youngbirds and inexperienced you could get a few losses.i had a shock when i sat down and checked my records.i have lost 8 youngsters so far,4 during breaking in and 4 training.i have 24 youngsters in total now. their really starting to bud.
Guest Paulo Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 2 chucks before today at 7 miles 1 chuck this afternoon again from 7 miles followed by another from 16 miles 4 chucks in total and wont make the first race, maybe not the second. Hoping to have them at the Humber by Wednesday though Hows them ones u got off me getting on? Rodders has pm'd me to say he won a 3rd club mid week race with one
jimbhoy29 Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 ive had 4 tosses 7 ml 14 ml and 2 at 25ml first race for me 2morrow 43 ml to carnwarth

Running 'em down the road in the car will only wear the car out. Mine used to go all over the place on my truck not any more.
