I have 2 hens that have been raced upto 146 miles this season. I have the Lillers race on Saturday which is 272 miles to me. My youngsters lost all form about 5 weeks ago and were then confined to the loft for 3 weeks and have been gradually improving since. The last 2 weeks they have been exercising like demons and have been doing 1h 30 mins - 2hours each time without flagging at all. I took them training today for the 1st time in weeks (40 miles) and they come in a good time. The feather condition is good, the one hen is growing a few on the back of the neck but the general condition is very good. What is peoples opinions of racing these 2 hens and jumping them from 146 - 272 miles?

keep them for next year rich m8....unless you are entering the national ...but for a club card they would better suit you for next season...where they can give you more fun with them.

its only my opinion but id leave them at home m8....paul.

Cheers Paul, I am 40-60 at the moment. I think I might keep them and put them in the 2 comeback races the following 2 weeks. Cheers m8.

much better idea m8...sent you a pm  ;)

No. Having fun in the sky around the loft is not the same as 7/8 hours in NE wind, forecast for this weekend. I'd want them trained & back racing either at 150 mile stage, or onto the next (180 for us) and if they came well from that, and moult was OK, then I'd have no hesitation going 270 miles.

educate them with the comebacks after a couple more tosses, why throw them away!

We made a mistake last year - not in jumping the birds - but laying them off racing for 2/3 weeks - then sending - the result was just 50% returns - 5 back from 10 - and only one on the day - 240 miles - they had all been to 160 or 170 mile races

I would never do that again

So - personally I wouldn't send the youngsters to Lillers

leave them in the hut mate, youngsters thrive on weekly racing... jumping them back in at this stage a bit pointless, there winning nothing any way!
